Beginning in the 2006–2007 school year, the Salt Lake City School District Board of Education has sought ways to improve the climate for learning in our high schools. Since 2007, the board has approved a number of specific actions to bring about equity in funding among the three comprehensive high schools, strengthen district support for high school programs, and increase options for students. For this reason, we asked the principals and assistants in charge of scheduling at each high school site to attend the public meetings over two years, during which time they developed proposed modifications to current schedules that begin to address some of these problems.
This decision to offer a modified block schedule at our high schools created some discussion among our stakeholders and led to a hearing between the Salt Lake Teachers Association and the district. On Monday, August 23, 2010, the board of education met to take action on the recommendations from the hearing and to approve the locally developed schedules at the three high schools. A full description of the board's decision can be found below.
