It is the policy of the Salt Lake City School District Board of Education to encourage parents, guardians, and other interested citizens to visit classrooms, libraries, and general facilities; to participate in activities; and to attend school events, provided such visits do not disrupt school operations or the educational process.

The board believes that schools are centers of community. Welcoming citizens into the schools brings many benefits, including increased public understanding of education issues and greater collaboration between school employees and the larger community. The purpose of this policy is to promote safe operation, parent involvement, and community investment in the schools.

The board strongly encourages volunteerism, especially by parents and guardians. Nevertheless, all visitors must check in at the school office immediately after entering the school building, receive authorization to visit, and agree to abide by school rules and regulations designed to protect students, employees, and the learning climate.

The building principal, or principal’s designee, has the authority to exclude from the school premises any person who disrupts, or who appears likely to disrupt, the educational process. Unauthorized visitors will be reported to the principal and directed to leave school property. Law enforcement authorities may be called, if necessary.
