The District Calendar Committee, a shared governance committee with the various stakeholders represented, is charged with developing options for the instructional calendars for a three-year cycle. All school community councils (SCC) are charged with reviewing the calendar options and determining which calendar to select. Each school’s vote is weighted based on the student enrollment. The calendar option with the most votes is then forwarded to the Salt Lake City Board of Education as a recommendation.
This year, the calendar options include three different models (see links to the left). A minimum of three options for each year must be provided. Option 1 for each school year follows a pattern that is most similar to the calendars the district has been following recently. Option 2 for each year provides an early start model with the first day of school in early August. Option 3 for each year provides a late start calendar with the first day of school after Labor Day.
To help you in reviewing and discussing the calendar options, we have provided a single sheet comparison of the three calendars for the school year 2011-12 and a single page sheet with some ideas and concepts to consider. Two district-wide informational meetings will also be held with representatives from the district and the calendar committee present. The first of these meetings will be held on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at 7 p.m. at Highland Park Elementary School. The second meeting will be held on Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Glendale Middle School at 7 p.m.
We encourage you to attend one of these informational meetings and to help us inform your school communities of these opportunities as well. Furthermore, we strongly encourage you to hold an informational meeting at your individual school site to discuss the calendar options. Representatives from the District Calendar Committee are available to attend your individual meetings.
