TELL/Teachers of English Language Learners

TELL is a two year ESL endorsement program that meets one night per week. It has been researched by two department supervisors and a former Board of Education member who was a college professor, at the request of the Superintendent. The program was adopted by the Board to be the district approved ESL endorsement program at the beginning of 2003 - 2004 school year.

Registration is filled out and paid at the district ALS office in suite 206 from May 1st to the beginning of class. Only registration and a personal check will reserve placement. No credit/debit cards are accepted - cash or check (preferred) only.

Each of the six courses are ten sessions. Class size is limited to 30 students and must be taken in numerical succession.

The first course begins the week following the first week of traditional school. Second year courses begin with course four and follow the same schedule as first year students. Classes are scheduled Tuesday or Wednesday at 3:30 and end at 6:30 resulting in three hours of seat time. All holidays and recesses are observed and no classes are taught those nights.

Classes are held at various school locations within the district. Most classes are held in the school library. A list of these locations is printed on the yearly schedule.

The instructors have completed an endorsement program and are trained by the university. They are personnel who work within the district.

TELL program is a full 18 hour university credit. It is NOT a workshop format and it cannot be taken pass/fail. Practicum credit is integrated in each course and posted at the end of course three and six.

Charges to the student are: $90 per course ($50 = tuition, $40 = student guide). These charges are due at registration and prior to the beginning of each course. Checks may be postdated with approval from the ALS office. The student guide is purchased by the district and is under copyright protection. It may not be copied or shared by class members.

In addition to the above charges, the district pays $30 per course tuition and $160 for the practicum credit.

Additional books and materials are supplied by the ALS office on a library system. If the materials become lost or damaged, the student must make restitution or their grade is with held.

Other programs are available through other institutions but the district does not provide their information. The cost of other programs is the responsibility of the individual.

If you have further questions, contact Louise Benzon at 801.578.8296, ALS Secretary.
