Most Frequently Asked Questions for Student Entering Kindergarten
In order to be admitted to the Extended Learning Program, you and your child
must currently reside and remain residing within the boundaries of the Salt
Lake City School District.
Your child must be five years old on or before September 1.
Transportation will be available according to District guidelines. Additional
information will be provided if your child is offered an ELP placement.
The class size at each site will be approximately twenty-five students.
Your child does not need to know how to read to be accepted in the Extended
Learning Program, but should know the letters of the alphabet and the consonant
letter sounds (using lower case letters).
A literacy framework is the foundation for reading and writing instruction. The
teachers use research based practices for advanced learners. Students will be
instructed at their appropriate, accelerated performance level in reading and
mathematics.
ELP kindergarten is held during the morning for approximately 2.5 hours a day
Monday through Thursday, and 2 hours on Friday. Most years, an extended day
option is available through the community education program for a minimal fee.
Part of the success of the magnet program depends upon the participation of
parent volunteers who assist teachers in the classrooms and participate in special
projects. If your child is admitted to the program, you will be encouraged to
volunteer.
