Verbal Interpreter Qualifications

Summary: This position interprets orally to and from target language and English during meetings, such as parent/teacher conferences, IEP's, SEP/SEOP's, and other school-related meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential:

  1. Provides verbal interpretation services to the schools and district departments upon request. May be required to provide interpretations with little notice in emergency situations.
  2. Maintains and promotes awareness of the importance of good communication with the non-English speaking community.

Additional:

  1. Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications

Essential:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Must pass a standard verbal interpreter test.
  3. Speaks, reads and writes target language and English fluently.
  4. Has at least 1 year experience providing verbal interpretation of target/English language in a professional setting.
  5. Is available during school hours.
  6. Has reliable transportation to and from assigned district school(s).
  7. Interpersonal Relations: Maintains effective relationships with others. Uses tact. Is sensitive to feelings and needs of others. Shows ability to solve human grievances.
  8. Stress Management: Maintains stability under pressure
  9. Initiative: Actively tries to influence events to achieve goals. A self-starter, working well without close supervision. Tries to achieve goals beyond minimal levels of performance.
  10. Adaptability: Ability to perform a variety of tasks, often changing assignments on short notice. Copes well with interruptions and changes.
  11. Performs essential duties and responsibilities efficiently, accurately and safely, with or without reasonable accommodation, and without posing a threat of harm to self or others.
  12. Organization skills: Can establish priorities and a course of action for handling multiple tasks.

Additional:

  1. Is native speaker of target language.
  2. Has some verbal interpreting experience in a Utah school setting.
