All Salt Lake City School District offices and schools will be closed from December 24, 2009, through January 1, 2010. Normal office and school hours will resume on Monday, January 4, 2010.

National Board Certified Teachers
Congratulations to the district's newest National Board Certified teachers: Carolyn Brimhall, Julie Lloyd, Karen Trujillio, and Karl Wagstaff. Like board-certified doctors and accountants, teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review.
In a congressionally-mandated study, National Board Certification was recently recognized by the National Research Council as having a positive impact on student achievement, teacher retention, and professional development.

Tokens for Turkeys
Second graders from Nibley Park School took part in a Community of Caring project called "Tokens for Turkeys." Students were able to raise $927.00 to provide holiday food baskets and gift cards for six families in need. This Community of Caring Penny Drive involved the entire school community and became a central project for our second grade Character Education Initiative this school year. Congratulations to all students and their teachers, Ms. Camala Richard, Mrs. Katie Dunn, and Ms. Laura Clinton.

"Walk More in Four" Winners
Dilworth Elementary School had the most students participate in the Utah Department of Transportation's "Walk More in Four" program. Ten students received prizes from UDOT. One student won a bike and helmet, another student won a scooter and helmet, and the rest won water bottles.

American Express Donation
A $2,500 donation from American Express will help students at West High School as they get ready for college. West High will use the money to support the American College Testing (ACT) preparation classes.

Utah Teacher of the Year
Mary Jane Morris from Northwest Middle School was today named the 2010 Utah Teacher of the Year. Morris was given the award during a surprise assembly at her school. Morris is the second Utah Teacher of the Year from Salt Lake City School Disitrict in as many years. Dilworth Elementary School's Sharon Gallagher-Fishbaugh was the 2009 Utah Teacher of the Year.

Highland High School Student Winners
Highland High School had three of six state winners in the 2009 National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing. The students are Mark Barnard, Maddy Miller, and Helen Makhdoumain. The Achievement Awards in Writing are conferred by the National Council of Teachers of English in recognition of excellence in writing by high school juniors. Winners demonstrate writing ability in two forms: first, in a sample of their best writing, in any form or genre, drafted and revised over time; and second, in an impromptu essay on a subject set by the Achievement Awards Advisory Committee.

Supplemental Educational Services at Northwest Middle School
Salt Lake City School District has been given a one- year waiver by the U.S. Department of Education to offer Supplemental Educational Services (SES) to students at Northwest Middle School. Northwest Middle has been identified as a school in need of improvement as defined by No Child Left Behind. With the waiver, the district is able to offer parents of eligible students these tutoring services during the school’s first year of improvement rather than providing students transportation to another school.

The next district professional development day for faculty of middle schools and traditional elementary schools is October 19, 2009. On this day participants will have the opportunity to attend the Salt Lake City School District fall conference and be paid at their per diem rate. Audrey Powell has been named the Parent Educator of the Year by Utah Parents as Teachers. The award is given to one outstanding educator each year. Nominations are taken from colleagues, supervisors, and families that the educator is currently serving or that they have served in the past. Powell has received numerous letters from all of these sources. She has a long history of exemplary service in the community on many levels.

AVID Scholarhips
Four West High School AVID sophomores were awarded a multi-year scholarship from Northrop Grumman (an international Electronic Systems group) this summer. The annual scholarship will be $5,000 per year, which will pay for tuition, room, and board at a university.

Utah History Teacher of the Year
The Utah State Board of Education honored Tim Bailey, a fifth grade teacher in Salt Lake City 's Escalante Elementary School and Utah 's History Teacher of the Year. Bailey is the author of a series of books published by Scholastic called Easy Simulations. The series is targeted at upper elementary and middle school classrooms. Each book provides the tools needed to conduct week-long simulations on different topics such as explorers, the American Revolution and how a bill becomes a law. He has also pioneered efforts to help other teachers move away from a reliance on textbooks to student-centered, activity and idea based instruction. Bailey is also a former Utah State Teacher of the Year.

Computer Maintenance
This weekend, Sunday, June 28, there will be some major maintenance at the district's Internet service provider. This will affect all Internet connectivity to and from the district, including the district Web site and e-mail. The maintenance begins at 2 p.m. and should be finished by 7 p.m.

Student Winners
Two Salt Lake City School District teams recently returned from the Future Problem Solving International Conference held at Michigan State University in East Lansing. A Wasatch Elementary School team took 8th place in the FPS Team Written Competition, and a team from Ensign Elementary School took 2nd place in the Presentation of Action Plan Category. The teams competed against students from every state in the U.S., most Canadian provinces, and several countries from around the world.

Welcome Center
Horizonte Instruction and Training Center recently received a grant for $300,000 and was designated an Immigrant and Refugee Welcome Center. Welcome Centers are central and convenient locations that provide social services to immigrants and refugees and create opportunities for all to work together to build cohesive communities. Funded with revenue generated by the Women’s Philanthropic Network, United Way of Salt Lake was able to make critical grants to Horizonte and three other Welcome Centers.

Salt Lake City School District Artstream schools and Utah's Hogle Zoo announce a student art exhibit, Walk on the Wild Side 2009, from Thursday, May 14 to Monday, May 25 in the Hogle Zoo auditorium. Swing for Smiles Golf Tournament
The Salt Lake City School District and the Salt Lake Education Foundation invite you to help the children of Salt Lake City and get a chance to win a Lexus by participating in the Swing for Smiles Golf Tournament on Thursday, May 28. This charity golf tournament will benefit the Smart Smiles 4 Students mobile dental clinic. The clinic, housed in a 58-foot trailer, has visited dozens of schools and helped thousands of Salt Lake City children receive necessary dental work and restore smiles to their faces. Many of these children could not afford to visit a dentist and would not have been treated without generous help from people like you.

Northwest Middle School Celebrates 50 Years
Northwest Middle School will host an open house this weekend to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the school. Visitors will be able to browse through old yearbooks, scrapbooks, and photos of the original building and the new building. Carnival rides and games will also be part of the celebration. The open house runs from 1:00 p.m. through 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 9.

Starting today, students from West High School, Highland High School, Bryant Middle School, and Glendale Middle School will come together for a three-day event to create and perform student-written, student-directed 10-minute plays. This exciting new event will showcase the tremendous talent of Salt Lake City School District students, and provide them with an opportunity to explore the process of creating a play from start to finish. The original plays will be performed for the community on Saturday, May 2, at 12:30pm at Glendale Middle School.

District Seeks Input Through Online Survey
The Salt Lake City School District is beginning a planning process that will result in a new five-year plan for 2010-2015 focused on teaching and learning. The process includes gathering information through an online survey as well as in public meetings. The goal is to complete the proposed plan by early fall, with recommendation of the final plan going to the Salt Lake City Board of Education for approval by the end of 2009.

Backman Receives $10,000 Grant
Backman Elementary School is one of just ten schools in the nation to receive a $10,000 grant for its health and wellness program. The grant is part of the Cartoon Network's National Recess Week, an ongoing campaign to inspire kids to get healthy and active. Congratulations Backman!

Grant News
Congratulations to Heather Newell, District 504 Specialist, who recently received a $1,536 grant from 100% For Kids, Utah Credit Union Education Foundation. The grant will be used to purchase four Fusion Text to Speech devices, which will be assigned to qualified students for the school year. These small basic computers will aid students in word prediction and recognition, vocabulary, spelling, auditory feedback, writing, and motor skills. Students will use the Fusion in the classroom and also at home to do homework under parental supervision.

UELMA Award
Congratulations to Julie Atwood, the District’s Supervisor of Educational Technology and Library Media, who was recently named the Utah Educational Library Media Association (UELMA) Administrator of the Year. The award was presented to Atwood at the recent UELMA banquet. Atwood was nominated by several library technology teachers. They praised Atwood for her positive attitude and her skills as an advocate, problem solver, and mentor.

Over the past two years, students, faculty, administration, and members of the East High community have focused on becoming more physically fit through dietary awareness and physical activity. West High School Wins State 4A Boys Basketball Championship
In what is being called one of the biggest upsets in state history, West High School's boys basketball team won the state championship this weekend by defeating Provo High School. The Panthers won the state championship for the first time since 1975, and the win also denied Provo a third consecutive title.

Schools and Students Collaborate on Musical Production
As part of a generous Classroom Mini Grant from the Salt Lake Education Foundation, second grade students from Nibley Park School visited Highland High School students to collaborate on the upcoming musical "Nanny Goats Gruff." Under the guidance of their teacher, Mr. Robert Stevens, the high school students designed and built a bridge for the set of the play, while students from Nibley Park worked on sanding the set with the older students. The second graders also visited the Women's Chorus and teacher Kathleen Slagle to work on vocal performance, and the Nibley Park students worked on acting lessons with students from the Salt Lake School for the Performing Arts and their teacher Schalee Schmidt.
The operetta "Nanny Goats Gruff" will be presented at Nibley Park School on March 10 at 6:30 p.m.

Open Enrollment Window
The Open Enrollment Window is almost over! For the coming school year, students interested in enrolling in a Salt Lake City school who live outside the district or school boundaries may apply for an out-of-resident transfer during the Open Enrollment Window, which ends February 20, 2009. Applications are taken in the Student Services Department of the Salt Lake City School District Administration East Building, 440 East 100 South, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dilworth Students Share the Love
Last week, the Dilworth Elementary School Student Council delivered a basket full of Valentines to cancer patients and their families at Primary Children’s Medical Center. Student council members talked with a social worker who works directly with patients in Oncology. They learned about cancer treatments, and what the hospital does for its child patients. This was a great opportunity for students to learn and provide service to others.

KCPW Interview with Joan Reynolds about C & A Lab
(KCPW News) Public school districts are courting parents attracted to the variety of options available at charter and private schools by creating specialized programs. The Curriculum and Assessment Lab at Salt Lake City School District is one of these, with a unique curriculum and mixed-age classrooms. KCPW's Elizabeth Ziegler spoke with the recently retired assessment supervisor for the district, Joan Reynolds, about the program and its plans to expand.

Notice to Parents of Former Special Education Students
Salt Lake City School District's Special Education Department will be destroying outdated records. Special education records for students who have not received special education services on or after June 1, 2004, will be destroyed after March 1, 2009. Parents or guardians who want their child's records, or emancipated minors who want their own records, should contact the school where the student last attended or call Lisa Hanson at 801-578-8203.

National Board Certified Teachers
Congratulations to the District's eight new National Board Certified teachers! They are Vicky Mayall, Karen Steele, Jana Edward, Rebecca Bowen, Kerrie Baughman, Ruth Campbell, Toni Simmons, and Kevin Smith. These teachers are part of 35 Utah teachers who achieved National Board Certification in 2008.
The total number of Utah teachers who are National Board Certified currently stands at 161. Salt Lake City School District ranks among the top five districts in the state for the number of National Board Certified teachers.

Title I School Awards
Congratulations to Newman Elementary School and Mountain View Elementary School! Newman Elementary has been named a Utah Title I High Performing School. Mountain View Elementary has been awarded the Utah Closing the Achievement Gap Title I School Award.

C&A is Expanding
There’s a new choice for 7th and 8th grade students in 2009-10. Salt Lake District’s Curriculum and Assessment Lab classrooms will be expanded to include classes at Clayton Middle School. The new classes will be a “school within a school” where students will work in integrated blocks for social studies/language arts and science/math. Classes will be mixed grades and students will stay with outstanding teachers during their two middle school years.

West High School Math Awards
Congratulations to West High School! For the third year in a row, West High has earned the designation by the Mathematical Association of America as an “AMC 8 Honored School” for producing at least three exceptionally high scores at the recent American Mathematics Contest.
