On Saturday, May 16 at 2:00 p.m., in Highland's Allred Little Theatre, students from Highland High School and the Salt Lake School for the Performing Arts will present a free concert reading of “Something Beautiful Somewhere,” a brand new musical by Tina Lear and Elise Forier. The script centers on two teenage sisters who are caught up in the 1912 "Bread and Roses" strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Highland and SPA are commissioning this new musical to provide great performance opportunities for young women as well as young men.
Last May, the schools co-presented the first act, and this year they will present the full show. The musical also had a concert reading at CAP-21 in New York City in March, and the two schools hope to co-produce the first full production during the 2010-2011 school year. The playwright (from Washington) and composer (from New York) have been in residence this week talking and rehearsing with students and developing the next version of this exciting work-in-progress. The residency and presentation are part of the Imagination Celebration of Salt Lake City.
