Four West High School AVID sophomores were awarded a multi-year scholarship from Northrop Grumman (an international Electronic Systems group) this summer. The annual scholarship will be $5,000 per year, which will pay for tuition, room, and board at a University. There were 12 applications from West High School with four AVID and two non-AVID students receiving this prestigious award. The AVID recipients were Jesse Enriquez, Daniel Alvarez, Randy Towner, and Patricia Arellano with non-AVID students Alex Meija-Sosa and Schuyler Allart.
Working with their AVID Elective Teacher, Dr. Cheryl Forster, the students had to write an extensive four-question essay and have extra-curricular activities in addition to their high GPA, attendance, and citizenship. Their packet also had to include letters of recommendation from math or science teachers. The students also had to conduct a personal interview with a team of Northrop Engineers.
The scholarship, called WORTHY (Worthwhile To Help high school Youth), was created in 1998 to help develop tomorrow’s technical talent. Students must want a college degree in engineering, physics, computer science, or math and must be a student in their sophomore year of high school in good standing.
The scholarship recipients will visit Northrop Grumman one day per month during their junior and senior years to be mentored in the program by engineers employed by Northrop Grumman. If they complete the program and choose to go into engineering or a technical profession, they will receive $5,000 per year to attend a college or university of their choice.
