All Salt Lake City School District schools are now closed for Winter Recess. All district offices will be open Monday and Tuesday, December 20 and 21, but will then close for Winter Recess. Normal hours will resume on Monday, January 3, 2011. Happy Holidays!

ELP Placement Testing
The Extended Learning Department announces 2011-12 school year magnet elementary school placement testing for students who will be entering kindergarten through sixth grade next school year. A parent information meeting is scheduled for January 20, at the district office, from 6:30 p.m.to 8 p.m. to learn more about the district’s elementary ELP magnet programs. No registration is necessary. The testing window for students who will be in kindergarten through second grade next school year is from January 18 through March 18. Testing dates for students who will be in third through sixth grades are scheduled for the following Fridays, February 25 and March 11. Thank You to KUER and American Express
Earlier this year, KUER sponsored a fund drive to provide books for Title I classrooms in Salt Lake City School District. American Express matched each pledge. As a result, 2,767 books were purchased from First Book, a national non-profit organization which provides new books to children in need. The books will go to the individual libraries in 175 classrooms. We want to thank KUER and American Express for partnering with us to bring more books into our schools.

AMC 8 Math Test
Seven sixth-grade students at Hawthorne Elementary School have earned national recognition for scoring at least 60% on the recent AMC 8 math test. This test is designed to challenge the nation’s top middle school students - roughly 85% of the students taking this test nationally are 7th and 8th graders - and the average score nationally tends to be about 40%. Seven sixth-grade students earring 60% or above on the 2010 AMC 8 is a new record for any Utah elementary school. Congratulations to all of the students who participated and to their teachers Julie Lloyd, Julie Anzelmo, and Guy Nickerson.

National Board Certification
Congratulations to Julia Anzelmo, Mohsen Ghaffari, Tricia Holden, Patricia Jones, Angie Magnavito-Mora, Susan McKelvey, and Marilyn Taft for achieving their National Board Certification. Susan McKelvey became the first counselor in the state of Utah to become National Board Certified. National Board Certification is the highest certification a teacher can receive in the country. It is a very rigorous process that requires teachers to analyze and reflect on their practice and how it impacts student learning. Salt Lake City School District leads the state in the number of teachers achieving certification this year. Currently, 30 SLCSD teachers have achieved this certification since 2005.

Newman Hosts Secret Santa Shop
Newman Elementary School is hosting a Secret Santa Shop. The shop offers students a place to purchase low-cost holiday gifts while teaching them about managing money and allowing them to practice math skills. The shop is open Thursday and Friday, December 2 and 3, during school and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday evening.

Teacher Wins Grant
Shea Wickleson, a teacher from the Salt Lake Center for Science Education, has received a Toshiba America Foundation Grant of $10,600. Her project, "Untangling the Food Web: The Science of Kitchens, Fields and Factories," focuses on the investigation into the complex origins and processes involved in what sustains the modern human race. In partnership with the University of Utah, SLCSE students will use isotopes to trace the carbon in school lunches back to its plant origins, map fruit trees in their neighborhood using GIS, debate the merits of genetically engineered food, and experiment with both traditional and technological forms of food preservation. By providing multiple class-wide and individual research opportunities this project aims at honing students’ skills of collecting and analyzing real data, drawing conclusions, and understanding the nature of science.

Second Graders Gobble Up Tokens for Turkeys
In conjunction with their monthly Character Education topic of "Compassion," second graders from Nibley Park School raised $802.46 for their annual Tokens for Turkeys program. This service learning project helped nine local families in need with Thanksgiving food baskets and gift cards. Students throughout the school completed service learning projects to raise the needed funds. Congratulations to these second graders and the entire Nibley Park student body!

Clayton Showcase
The Clayton Showcase is an open house for current and prosective students at Clayton Middle School. There will be student art on dispaly, presentations from various classes, and performances by the Show Choir, Dance classes, and Orchestra. Teachers and administration will be on hand to answer questions regarding magnet ELP, neighborhood ELP, and Curriculum and Assessment programs. In addition, there will be a bake sale and silent auction to help raise funds for student activities. The showcase will be held on December 6, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Salt Lake City School District Earns Nation’s Top
Honor for Pest Management
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the IPM Institute of North America Inc., and the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food today recognized the Salt Lake City School District for its continuing efforts as a national model to reduce the risks of pests and pesticides in its schools. The district uses Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices to manage pests, reducing the amount of toxic pesticides.

Solar For Schools
State and national energy experts met at Hillside Middle School today to announce the Solar for Schools program for Utah. Solar for Schools is a statewide energy education initiative that will install 73 solar photovoltaic arrays at schools throughout the state, with at least one array in each of the state’s 41 districts. The program was also created to help Utah students learn the value of renewable energy technology first hand. The energy education program is slated to be the first of its kind in the state of Utah.

Coats For Our CommUnity
From November 12th through 27th, the University Staff Council is partnering with the Salt Lake Education Foundation to collect new coats, sweatshirts, and hoodies for children and teens in the Salt Lake Valley. Coats are needed in all sizes - from newborns to age 18.

Shop For Wholesome Foods and Help Students
For the next few weeks, Whole Foods Market in Sugar House has identified the Salt Lake Education Foundation as its spotlight partner. From now until January 16, 2011, every time someone shops at Whole Foods in Sugar House and uses their own bags, a donation of $.15 per bag will be made to the foundation. The funds we raise will be used to help our schools involved in the Garden Based Learning program, which exposes students to gardening, teaches them the benefits of gardening, and encourages them to eat healthier.

Understanding Utah's New Early Reading Law
In March of 2010, the Utah State Legislature enacted a law that requires school districts to provide notice by the middle of the school year to parents or guardians of students in first, second, or third grade who are reading below grade level. The district has sent a letter to parents to help them better understand this new law and what the district is doing to help students.

Wind Energy Challenge Competition
A team of MESA students from
West High School placed second in the statewide Wind Energy Challenge Competition. There were 17 high school teams competing. The students had to engineer a device to lift a mass, pull a car three meters, and generate an electrical current and voltage. Students also conducted an oral presentation, built an academic poster, and wrote a scientific paper. The team gratefully acknowledges the engineering advisement of Enrique Arce-Larreta, the support of advisors Theresa Mbaku and Lin Eugster, and help of the school librarian, Sarah Herron.

West High MESA Students Win District Competition
West High School MESA students won the district's Wind Energy Challenge. The Wind Energy Challenge event involves the transfer of energy from the wind source to the defined tasks. Teams were rated on their performance, technical paper, academic display, and oral presentation. The West High MESA team will compete at Lagoon on May 14 at the state competition against 17 other high schools.

Doug Jorgensen, a science teacher at Highland High School, has been selected by the Utah PTA as a Golden Apple Award Recipient for 2010. Each year, the Golden Apple Awards are presented by the Utah PTA and KUED in recognition of six outstanding educators, selected from nominations throughout the state. The award recognizes teachers who show extraordinary work with students, parents, PTA and the community, in addition to providing students with the educational and social tools they need to succeed.

Teacher Wins NEA National Award
Sharon Gallagher-Fishbaugh, a teacher at Dilworth Elementary School, has won the National Education Association Foundation's highest award - the $25,000 NEA Member Benefits Award for Teaching Excellence. Gallagher-Fishbaugh was nominated for the award by the Utah Education Association, and was one of 38 public school educators nominated by their state associations.

Upcoming Art Shows
On Thursday, April 29, Highland High School will present Tartanfest, a festival that interweaves the arts. Works by visual arts students will be on display in the Highland Gallery and Ram Foyer starting at 6:30pm, with a slide show featuring our graduating seniors at 7:10pm, and musical theatre and dance performances in the auditorium at 7:30pm. Admission is free.
The annual Spring ART show is next week at Partnership Gallery, located at 534 South 500 West. It will showcase the talents of West High School visual art students. The show runs April 26, 27, and 28, from 4 - 6 p.m.

Secondary Visual Arts Show
The Salt Lake City School District Secondary Visual Arts Show begins this Friday, March 19, 2010 and extends through Friday, March 26, 2010. Middle and high school arts students from across the Salt Lake City School District exhibit 2D and 3D work. The show is located at the Partnership Gallery at 534 South 500 West. This Friday, March 19, the show opens with a gallery stroll at 6:00 pm and a reception from 7:00-8:30 p.m. The awards are announced at 7:30 pm. The gallery will be open Saturday, March 20 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. and March 22-26 from 4:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. The public is invited.

Educator of the Year Award
Congratulations to Pat Lambrose! She was honored as the "Educator of the Year" at the recent Utah Coalition for Educational Technology Conference. Pat has worked in Salt Lake City School District for many years as a teacher and an Educational Technology Facilitator. Students, teachers, and parents have benefited from Pat's commitment to technology integration. Pat is an avid biker, skier, and outdoor enthusiast and incorporating GIS/GPS into the curriculum is one of her many areas of expertise.

Open Classroom Open House
The Open Classroom will be hosting a prospective parent presentation Thursday, February 11, at 6:30 p.m. It's an opportunity to talk to OC faculty and parents and tour the school's unique classrooms. Hugs for Haiti
A group of students at Ensign Elementary School has arranged a "Hugs for Haiti" campaign. They started with an initial goal of $500, but the donations came pouring in, and the students ended up raising $2790.15 They will present a check to the American Red Cross on Thursday.

Jackson Elementary School students successfully completed a Service Learning Project and raised $1,139.01 for Pennies for Peace. The students raised money to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan where children, especially girls, are often denied an education.
