SALT LAKE CITY - Salt Lake City School District charter school, the Open Classroom (OC), is working to fill a budget gap left by shrinking state revenues. With the support of local businesses, the Salt Lake City Fire department, a local rock band and a small army of volunteers, OC students and their parents will march on Friday to raise desperately-needed funds for their school.
"These students have never been drilled on the impossibilities," said OC Principal Chris Gesteland. "They believe the community will stand behind them in their efforts. After hearing from so many generous sponsors I'm starting to believe it too."
The second annual 5K Walk-a-thon will be held Friday, April 2nd, from 11:00-1:00. The route begins at The Open Classroom (134 D Street) with a grand kick-off from the Salt Lake Fire Dept. sounding the siren for each classroom beginning their 5K walk. Each student will receive a 'Walk-A-Thon' button from a Firefighter and then head toward Memory Grove rounding the lake and returning back to the school greeted by a Creamie popsicle and the OC's own rock band! Individuals and local businesses are contributing volunteers and, of course, cash donations.
All proceeds assist in funding field trips, special events and classroom supplies.
Anyone wishing to join in support of the OC Walk-a-thon can donate on-line at www.ocslc.org. Please contact the school for more information.
