Green Schools Recognition

Congressman Jim Matheson joined Bryan Howard, the Legislative Director for the U.S. Green Building Council and Hillside Middle School Assistant Principal Logan Hall today to discuss advances in green construction by Utah schools and to announce that 19 Salt Lake City schools have been recognized as 2011 Energy Star certified schools.

Hillside Middle School was chosen to host this event because the recently rebuilt school saves energy through design features such as a white roof (to reflect heat), special lighting and light sensors, and light “shelves” to take advantage of sunlight. It also uses water-saving appliances and landscaping.

Hillside is also one of the 19 Salt Lake City schools to receive letters of recognition and display labels from the Energy Star program. Each school has either maintained a high level of energy efficiency or have improved enough to now qualify with a score greater than 75 on a scale of 1 to 100.  This award acknowledges that these schools are at least 35% more efficient than similar schools across the country.  They also generate at least 35% less greenhouse gas emissions.
