The Grand America Hotel, Salt Lake City School District, and Salt Lake Education Foundation Announce Unique Teacher Recognition Program

(Salt Lake City) – The Grand America Hotel, the Salt Lake Education Foundation, and the Salt Lake City School District today announced a partnership that enables a new and unique teacher recognition program. Instead of being based on nominations and anecdotal stories like other recognition programs, this innovative program recognizes teachers based on data, specifically growth in student achievement.

The Teacher Achievement Recognition program includes several different types of awards (see link below), all of which are based on growth in student achievement. Student scores from early in the school year will be compared to scores from the end of the school year to determine which teachers, teams of teachers, and schools have made the most progress. Comparing growth makes the program fair for all schools, regardless of demographics.

“We have one of the best, if not the best data department in public education,” said McKell Withers, Superintendent of Schools, Salt Lake City School District. “To now have a partner who will help us take our data and provide awards to exceptional teachers is very exciting.  I can see this program being a model for teacher recognition programs across the country.”

As part of the partnership, the hotel will provide rewards for teachers who are selected as award winners. The rewards will include certificates for stays at the hotel, certificates for Sunday brunch, and hosting parties at the hotel for school faculties.

“The Grand America Hotel was looking for a way to have a lasting and positive impact in our community, “ said Bruce T. Fery, President, Grand America Hotel. “When we discovered our local school district could use testing data to identify top performing teachers, it was a natural fit. This type of recognition program is one we can fully support.”

Three schools received awards at today's news conference. Based on CRT scores the following three schools were recognized as Top Performing Schools in the Salt Lake City School District for the 2010-11 school year.
