Salt Lake City School District to Provide Home Meals for Students During Remote Learning Period
Meals will be provided as groceries, with ingredients for meals that can be prepared at home

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Aug. 28, 2020 – The Salt Lake City School District will provide home meals for students during the remote learning period, which will begin on Sept. 8. The Salt Lake City School District anticipates conducting instruction via remote learning for the first quarter of the school year.

Home meals will be given to families as simple to prepare, healthy school meals that can be served at home. Large sacks of groceries (equivalent to one week’s worth of school meals) will be available for parents to pick up once each week at a designated school cafeteria. Food items will include frozen and refrigerated items that must be properly stored by the parent until served to the student. To help ensure safety, grocery bags will be packaged by district staff and provided to parents at time of service. Only registered students may participate. Parents/guardians must provide their active student’s name and ID number prior to receiving student meals.

Bar code readers will be provided in each school cafeteria. Scanning a printed student ID bar code at time of service is preferred. A printable bar code is part of the student schedule in PowerSchool. If needed, the student’s teacher or school secretary can help parents print a bar code for scanning.     

This is a federal food service program. Free/reduced meal benefit status and school enrollment is a requirement. Students who do not qualify for free/reduced meal benefits must pay in advance for their federally subsidized school meal.

At this time, payments will not be accepted in the school cafeteria. Families may pre-pay for student meals online using a check, credit card, or debit card at MyPaymentsPlus.com https://www.slcschools.org/departments/business-administration/child-nutrition/payments/

Each student meal meets the nutritional standard for a 9-12 grade student. Nevertheless, middle and elementary school students will continue to receive a discounted price. That being considered, a full week of meals (5 breakfast and 5 lunches) cost only $15.00 for elementary, $ 17.50 for middle, and $19.00 for high school students. No matter where meals are obtained, meal prices will be charged according to the pricing structure of the school the student attends. Students registered at a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) or Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) school will continue to receive free meals as offered.

Accommodations for special dietary needs can be made available upon request. Families may contact our registered dietician, Brianna Hardisty, to determine site location and to make additional arrangements, as needed (Brianna.Hardisty@slcschools.org).

Arrangements for other special requests must be approved by your school kitchen manager. For example, kitchen managers can arrange for daily meal service (rather than weekly food distribution) if a family lacks the ability to store or heat food at their home. On Friday, September 4, during the hours of 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, Take Home Meal service will be offered in the school cafeteria at the 17 designated school locations. Food provided must be used to serve student meals (breakfast and lunch) for the initial three days of school, September 8-10.

Afterwards, parents must obtain Take Home Meals once each week at a designated school cafeteria on a calendar school day that coincides with the following schedule:

·       Tuesday (11:30am to 1:00pm)

·       Wednesday (8:00am to 11:00am & 12:00pm to 1:00pm)

·       Thursday (8:00am to 11:00am & 12:00pm to 1:00pm).

All Take Home Meals provided during the week must be used to serve student meals (breakfast and lunch) on calendar school days beginning Friday and extended through Thursday of the following week.

DESIGNATED FEEDING SITES – TAKE HOME MEAL SERVICE

To avoid product shortages and improve service, parents may pickup Home Meals for their student once each week at any designated feeding site within their high school network. The only exception will be for students who attend CBTU, Horizonte, Innovations, and SLCSE (these students may obtain meals from any designated feeding site).

Registered students at Beacon Heights Elementary, Dilworth Elementary, Highland Park Elementary, Indian Hills Elementary, Nibley Park School, and Salt Lake School for the Performing Arts (SPA) may obtain meals from any designated feeding site within the Highland High network.
