Superintendent's Message 2020-01-10

Dear SLCSD families and community,

It’s that time of year again, when people begin to plan and set resolutions and goals for the new year. I hope you are among them, and I hope you will help your children set some goals as well. Maybe you’re thinking about trying a new experience, making a career change, or learning a new skill. Whatever your goal may be, invite your children to join in and help them learn the value of setting goals and then working hard to reach them.

Setting goals is a vital practice that can benefit anyone with a dream or a vision for their future. Young people who are just starting out on the grand journey of life are at a particularly opportune time to start building their goal setting skills. Not only will these skills serve them throughout their lives, but building them now will help them mold their future into one that they desire.

Goal setting is also a great way to instill a growth mindset: when your children believe that they can achieve a goal through persistence and hard work, they learn to be resilient and that overcoming small failures can lead to larger successes. As the saying goes, writing something down is the first step to making it happen. And as it turns out, research shows that people who write down their goals are more likely to achieve them.

According to Education World, there are six key secrets to successful goal setting:

  1. Write clear and measurable goals.
  2. Create a specific action plan for each goal.
  3. Read your goals daily and visualize yourself accomplishing them.
  4. Reflect on your progress to see if you are on target.
  5. Revise your action plans if needed.
  6. Celebrate your accomplishments.

Lastly, many people can feel they have failed if they do not stick to their new year’s resolutions or reach their goals, but you shouldn’t! Having fun with the goals you have picked can make you more likely to stick to them.

One goal that I have, and that I know everyone in SLCSD shares, is to do everything we can to help your children reach their highest potential and achieve great things. I sincerely ask for your help in reaching this goal. Working together to help our students, we can build a solid foundation for our community’s future.

Yours in education,
Dr. Lexi Cunningham
