Student leaders from four Salt Lake City School District high schools—East High School, Highland High School, Horizonte Instruction and Training Center, and West High School—joined local and state leaders at the Utah State Capitol for a Unity Summit designed to foster respect, reduce hate, and strengthen community bonds. Organized in partnership with community organizations such as the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office, Community Partners Against Hate, the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, the Salt Lake Human Rights Commission, and the United Jewish Federation of Utah, this event empowers students to build communities rooted in dignity, respect, and civic responsibility.
The summit meshes with the district’s Dignity Initiative, providing a platform for student leaders to engage in meaningful discussions and workshops focused on promoting inclusivity, empathy, and positive social action within their schools and neighborhoods. Through leadership-building activities, students will gain valuable tools for fostering a culture of acceptance and inclusion among their peers. Equipped with these skills, students will be prepared to lead programs in their own schools to reduce instances of contempt, helping to build safer, more supportive communities.
