Option B

All late start options presented to the Board of Education include two tiers, meaning one group of schools starts at a certain time and the second group starts 45 minutes later. The 45-minute separation provides our Transportation Department enough time to complete their bus routes to the first group of schools and then pick up and deliver students to the second group of schools.

We have a total of 137 routes driven by our buses each morning and afternoon. The school groups were created in an attempt to balance the number of routes between the first group of schools and the second group. Also, each chart is built using the following information.

• The school day is 6 hours and 40 minutes long.
• Schools are assigned to tiers/groups based on their morning start times.
• Start and end times need to be standardized, so early-out Fridays and late-start Mondays could be impacted. 

Option B has the first group of schools - 14 elementary schools and three high schools - starting at 7:45 a.m. The second group of schools - 14 elementary schools and five middle schools - would begin at 8:30 a.m. This first chart shows the start times for each group, the number of bus routes in each group, and the average time difference in starting times for each group. 

 

This second chart shows more details regarding changes in start times for each school. The first column names the school. The second column shows that school's current start time, and the third column shows the difference in the school's start time if this option was selected. Remember, in this option, the schools in light blue would start at 7:45 a.m. and the schools in light orange would start 45 minutes later, at 8:30 a.m.

The numbers in yellow at the bottom of the chart show the average change in start times for that specific group of schools. 

 

The following two charts contain the same information as described above, but these list the ending times for each group and school. The first group of schools (light blue) would end at 2:25 p.m., and the second group of schools (light orange) would end at 3:10 p.m.
