LGBTQ+ Student Support

SLCSD understands that discussing issues of bullying, harassment or fear of acceptance may be complicated for our LGBTQ+ youth. The district also understands how important it is for our LGBTQ+ youth to find a compassionate and understanding adult at their school to discuss these issues. For these reasons, SLCSD has designated at least one administrator and one counselor at each school to be trained in providing support to the district’s LGBTQ+ students. These advocates can assist LGBTQ+ students with addressing their needs. Respecting student privacy is an important aspect of this training, and the advocates will maintain confidentiality within specific legal limits. Please contact any trusted adult in your school to find out which building administrator and/or counselor can assist you as an LGBTQ+ Advocate. 

SLCSD strives to create welcoming and inclusive schools. Safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth will be made available and identifiable with the use of Safe Space Sticker and/or Posters.

SLCSD wants every student to feel safe and respected in all district schools. This includes being recognized by a student’s preferred name and a student’s gender marker. Students and/or parents may contact a school’s LGBTQ+ Advocate for guidance on changing name and/or gender markers on certain school records. The advocate will explain which records can be changed and which records cannot be changed. They will be able to help the student determine the appropriate name for documents that go home, yearbooks, class lists, etc. For more information regarding this type of request, refer to the administrative procedures for Board Policy G-24: Gender Inclusion. 

SLCSD aims to support transgender and gender nonconforming students by providing reasonable accommodations. A transgender or gender nonconforming student cannot be required to use a locker room or restroom that conflicts with the student’s gender identity. Transgender students have the right to use a school restroom that corresponds to their gender identity, regardless of the gender marker listed on their official school records. Every school also offers a gender-neutral restroom option for all students. The school LGBTQ+ Advocates will identify the location of the gender-neutral restroom for any transgender and gender nonconforming student needing this accommodation at their school. SLCSD is committed to providing reasonable and appropriate accommodations to all students who make a request for accommodations. LGBTQ+ students may request accommodations related to their classes and activities which are segregated by sex. As a general rule, students should be permitted to participate in all classes and activities in accordance with their gender identity asserted at school. • SLCSD will provide the same physical education and intramural sports opportunities to transgender and gender nonconforming students that are provided to all other students. Generally, this participation will be in accordance with the student’s gender identity that is consistently asserted at school. • SLCSD’s participation in state-wide competitive sports is governed by the Utah High School Activities Association (“UHSAA”). Participation will be determined on a case-by-case basis by applying the UHSAA policies and appeal procedures. The district is bound by UHSAA’s policies and must comply with them in order to maintain our membership status.
