SLSPA Graduate Wins National Theater Competition
Ethan Kelso, a graduate of the Salt Lake School for the Performing Arts, is the winner of the Best Actor award at the 11th Annual National High School Musical Theater competition.
The 11th Annual National High School Musical Theater competition, known as the Jimmy Awards, were held Monday, June 24, at Broadway’s Minskoff Theater in New York City. The competition started with over 100,000 students across the U.S. who competed in their home states for a variety of awards, including the title of Best Actor and Best Actress. Then, 86 students were selected from across the country travel to New York City to compete for the national title.
In addition to being recognized as the Best Actor, Ethan is eligible for a four-year scholarship to the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, is invited to perform in at the 2020 BroadwayCon in New York, and was also awarded a $25,000 scholarship from the Nederlander Producing Company of America.
Ethan enrolled at The Salt Lake School for the Performing Arts as a sophomore in 2016 where he was involved in the Music, Dance, and Theater departments. He performed a wide variety of roles with the Musical Theater program, and competed with the music and theater teams throughout his three years an SLSPA student. Ethan was nominated for Best Actor in the 2019 Utah High School Musical Theater Awards for his portrayal of Will Bloom in SLSPA's production of Big Fish.
