West High Student Wins Prestigious National Award
West High student Marianne Liu has been selected as one of the top 300 Broadcom Masters winners for her Science Fair project. The top 300 students from middle and elementary schools in the United States are selected among thousands of applicants representing the top ten percent from regional science fairs. Marianne was the only West High student from the University of Utah Science Fair that was selected in the top 300.
Marianne's project was titled: "The effects of sunscreen on marine life." When I visited her project, she told me she was motivated by Hawaii's recent ban on chemical sunscreens that harmed wildlife. She tested various natural alternatives, concluding that aloe vera is the best choice.
Liu is eligible to be selected in the top 30 in the country. If chosen, she will travel to Washington D.C. where she will be eligible for further prizes, including cash prizes of $25,000.
