Board Report for May 6, 2025

The board meeting began with a fantastic performance by the Escalante Elementary Mariachi, a 6th grade musical ensemble featuring violins, trumpets, guitars, bass guitar, and vocal performers. They performed three numbers and received a standing ovation. (They were also asked to perform at the City and County Building for Cinco de Mayo!) The Board of Education also recognized the West High MathCounts team for winning the recent state competition. (watch on YouTube)
The board heard the following reports:
- A review of the General Fund and Special Revenue Funds Budgets. Ninety percent of the general fund is used to pay for salaries and benefits, and the Special Revenue Funds include four separate funds: Child Nutrition Fund, Student Activities Fund, Pass-Through Taxes Fund, and the Salt Lake Education Foundation Fund. - An update on Pillar 1 of the Strategic Plan for Student Achievement. The report outlined the district’s commitment to fostering inclusive, responsive, and academically rich learning environments for every student. (watch on YouTube)
The board listened to comments on recommendations to repurpose Riley Elementary as a new Career and Technical Center and to upgrade fields at five schools to accommodate high school athletics during the rebuilds of Highland and West High Schools. (watch on YouTube)
The board discussed the following items:
- A proposal to create a contract position for an administrator on special assignment. This position would be temporary (a maximum of three years) and would help administrators develop inclusive practices focused on co-teaching between special education and general education teachers. This item was moved to the action agenda. (watch on YouTube)
- A presentation from our district charter schools. Administrators from Open Classroom and Salt Lake Center for Science Education reported on student achievement and spoke about other aspects of their schools. (watch on YouTube)
