Guidelines for Dances, Fieldtrips, and Other Activities

Dances

High schools are allowed to hold up to three one-time events/activities that are not co-curricular or extra-curricular in nature if the following requirements are met: 

  1. To enter the event, ALL STUDENT PARTICIPANTS AND CHAPERONES must provide one of the following: 
    • Proof of a negative COVID-19 test result (i.e., a copy of the results)
      • The test must have been conducted within 48 hours of the start of the event. As a convenience, testing will be available at the school site the day before the event.
        • No testing may be conducted on a student without written parental permission
    • Proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination 
      • Students must bring a copy of their immunization card or USIIS report, showing that they received their second dose at least two weeks prior to the event.  
    • Proof of a positive COVID-19 test result within the 90 days prior to the event 
  2. Masks are required at all activities and must be worn properly at all times. 
  3. The venue must be large enough to allow for social distancing; outdoor venues are recommended. 
  4. Pictures are allowed at these activities. Students will be allowed to briefly remove their masks to take pictures if they choose, but their masks must be put back on immediately following.  
  5. Food and drinks may be allowed but must be individually wrapped and in single-serve portions and should only be consumed in designated areas. Tables are allowed but seating should be arranged to accommodate social distancing. Masks may only be removed while actively eating/drinking and must be worn at all other times.   
  6. DJs are required to wear a mask and should be offered a COVID test at the school on the day prior to the event. 
  7. Schools cannot charge participants for the cost of the COVID tests performed at the school.   
  8. All activities must be approved by the school administration and the appropriate network director two weeks prior to the event date to allow for test planning and distribution of test materials. 

Awards Programs and Parent Nights

  1. Masks are required at all activities and must be worn properly at all times. 
  2. Teams and programs may have awards nights with parents invited, but food may not be served. The venue size must allow for social distancing and a maximum of 25% capacity. 
  3. Teams and programs may have awards banquets where only pre-packaged food is provided (no buffets or self-served foods allowed) and disposable utensils are used, but they must be held within the two-week window of testing and ONLY the student and advisors/coaches may attend. 

Student Assemblies

  1. Masks are required at all activities and must be worn properly at all times. 
  2. All mitigation procedures listed in the COVID-19 School Manual must be followed. 
  3. The venue must allow for social distancing and a maximum of 25% capacity. 
  4. Entrance and exit logistics must be planned to minimize students gathering and allow for social distancing. 

Field Trips 

  1. Field trip approval must be obtained from the principal, and transportation must be confirmed prior to any teacher moving forward with providing trip information to parents/students.  No money should be collected from students/parents until the field trip is approved. 
  2. Masks are required on all field trips and must be worn properly at all times, including while riding the bus.  School personnel should bring extra masks on all field trips as well as hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes. 
  3. Social distancing and mitigation strategies (including frequent hand washing) must be followed while on a field trip. Hand sanitizer will be provided on the bus and should be used as students load and unload the bus. 
  4. Field trips are allowed within Salt Lake County; for trips to other counties, please work with the network director to determine whether the destination is safe based on current COVID rates.   
  5. Parents who do not want their student to attend a field trip can use the normal opt-out procedure, such as not signing the permission slip or contacting the school site and informing staff of their decision to opt-out. 
  6. Supervision and instruction will be provided at the school for students who opt-out. 
  7. Students who are sick or exhibiting COVID symptoms or who have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive or is in quarantine will not be permitted to participate in field trips. 
  8. Eating during the field trip is highly discouraged.   
  9. If a student becomes ill, the parent must immediately pick up the student.  Enough chaperones must be in attendance in case a student becomes ill and requires isolation while awaiting pick-up.
