Athletic Fields During Rebuilds

Update on the athletic fields at Highland and West – September 1, 2025

As Highland High School and West High School prepare for major rebuilds, students will continue learning in their existing classrooms throughout construction. But with many athletic fields being removed to make way for new buildings, questions naturally arise about where student athletes will train and compete.

The Salt Lake City School District and Board of Education have been working to find the most efficient and supportive solutions. Since many sports facilities will be temporarily unavailable, the district has partnered with other schools in the district and with city parks to provide practice and competition spaces.

As part of this effort, upgrades and improvements will be made to the fields being used. When they are not serving as temporary homes for Highland and West teams, these enhanced facilities will also be available for other schools and the community to enjoy—leaving a lasting benefit beyond construction.

This collaborative approach ensures that athletic programs continue without interruption while campuses transform. The chart below outlines where each team will temporarily relocate and the expected timelines for their transitions.

A table lists athletic site locations during construction, with temporary locations and dates.

Update on Highland High School and West High School – July 30, 2025

We’re working on making plans for our athletic teams at each school to continue practicing and competing, even while their campuses are being rebuilt. One of the biggest challenges for school districts across the country right now is chronic absenteeism. It’s hard for our students to succeed in school if they’re not even coming to school. We know that participation in extracurricular activities is an important way to keep students engaged, and athletics are an important component of many students’ experiences. We will continue to work to plan for alternate practice and playing locations for each team as we strive to eliminate barriers to participation.
