Library Technology
Our Library Technology Department helps students become confident, curious, and capable learners. Each school has a certified teacher librarian who works with classroom teachers to help students find, evaluate, and use information effectively—whether from books, technology, or online sources.
We encourage a love of reading, help students build research and writing skills, and support them in becoming responsible digital citizens. Our libraries offer wide-ranging and engaging collections that reflect our community and inspire every student to learn, explore, and grow.

Library Learning Centers
The goal of our Library Learning Centers is to help students and staff become effective users of ideas and information. Each school’s Library Learning Center is led by a certified Library Technology Teacher, whose work has a proven, positive impact on student learning and achievement.
Our Library Technology Teachers wear many hats—they are teachers, instructional partners, information specialists, and program coordinators who make the library the heart of learning in every school.
-
As teachers, they help students and staff learn how to find, understand, and use information effectively.
-
As instructional partners, they collaborate with classroom teachers to design engaging lessons and integrate research and technology into everyday learning.
-
As information specialists, they ensure students have access to high-quality, diverse resources in all formats—print, digital, and multimedia.
-
As program coordinators, they guide the vision and goals of the Library Learning Center, ensuring it supports the school’s mission and serves the needs of the entire learning community.
Together, these roles create a vibrant space where students read, explore, create, and grow as lifelong learners.
Qualifications: Utah Teaching Certificate and either a MLS degree (or equivalent degree) or the Library Media Endorsement.

Battle of the Books
Every year, our elementary schools participate in the Battle of the Books. This fabulous event starts at the beginning of the year, when school teams begin to read the 20 books selected for the battle. The books are chosen by SLCSD librarians, drawing from Utah’s Beehive Books and other highly-reviewed current selections. Librarians write questions, and school teams compete to send a team to the district-wide competition.
We have four brackets, and the winning teams take home a trophy...but everyone takes home a love of reading and talking about books that they enjoy.
We would like to thank the Salt Lake Education Foundation for their generous support of this event. We couldn’t do it without them!

Parent Access to Student Library Accounts
The Salt Lake City School District believes that students should have opportunities to read a wide variety of engaging books. When students choose books that reflect their interests, they develop a love for reading and learning. The district has fully certified teacher librarians at every school who curate collections of books in every school. Students can check books out at the school or use Sora, our online library, to check out ebooks and audiobooks.
We love parents to be actively engaged in their child's reading and interests! Talking with your child about what they are reading helps them process what they’ve read, make connections to their own experiences, and articulate their thoughts and opinions. It also shows them that their reading is valued, fostering a love for reading and learning.
If you would like to view our collection or see what your student is currently reading, you can log into their library accounts following these directions. Please reach out to your student's teacher librarian if you have any questions or need help getting logged in.
