Bond Updates and Construction Projects

UPDATE: West High Reimagined – March 19, 2026

We held a ceremonial groundbreaking on Thursday, March 19, 2026, to mark the start of construction for the new West High School, a project made possible through a voter-approved general obligation bond in 2024.

The new campus represents a once-in-a-generation investment in one of Utah’s most historic schools. Opened in 1890, West High School is the oldest high school in Utah. The main section of the current school was completed in 1922 and has served generations of students in Salt Lake City. The redesigned campus will provide modern classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, and facilities that support academic, artistic, and extracurricular programs for future generations of students, while honoring the long-standing history and legacy of West High.

West High School’s current campus includes facilities built more than a century ago, with additions constructed over time to accommodate a growing student population. Many of these buildings now face significant infrastructure challenges, including aging plumbing and electrical systems, outdated heating and cooling systems, and classrooms that were not designed to support modern technology or flexible learning environments.

The West High School rebuild is estimated at approximately $300 million, with construction expected to take several years once work begins. When completed, the project will provide a modern campus designed to serve students for generations to come.
