Who We Are

The Salt Lake City School District (SLCSD), Utah’s flagship district, is known for its robust academic offerings, inclusive educational environment, focus on supporting students’ social and emotional learning, and for building college and career pathways for our students. We are Utah’s capital city district, and our boundaries mirror those of Salt Lake City. As Utah’s oldest school district, with a history dating back to the 1800s, the district has continually evolved to meet the needs of our community.

Today, we are committed to providing an excellent educational experience for the more than 19,000 students in our care. We are a vibrant and diverse urban district with students from all over the world and families who speak more than 80 languages. We are the preferred place to work for more than 3,000 employees, including 1,000 teachers, and our 36 schools offer an array of educational opportunities and programs to meet the needs of the students we serve. With a focus on innovation and collaboration, the Salt Lake City School District strives for excellence and equity: every student, every classroom, every day.

The SLCSD Way

The SLCSD Way expresses collective commitment to good governance and collaborative practices that advance our shared vision of excellence and equity as we work to increase student achievement, build a Dignity District, and lead as the flagship district in the state.

The SLCSD Way describes our collective work as an organization. We treat all people with dignity and establish collaborative environments where students can thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. We engage multiple voices as we make informed decisions, focused on students, in alignment with policy and guidance. We communicate clearly about the reasoning and context behind our decisions. We create welcoming schools grounded in a culture of belonging for all students, families, employees, and community members. Across the district, we advance the SLCSD Way by working together to uphold our responsibilities, gain and retain trust through operational consistency and fairness, and deliver the support and resources necessary to be Utah’s flagship district.

In SLCSD, we:

  • embrace and value our diversity and welcome all families and students into our schools
  • conduct business in an inclusive, transparent, and respectful manner
