Recognitions

The board honored the Central 9th Coalition and Youth Council for their work with youth in reducing the risk of drug use, suicide, and violence, and they heard from three district students who are leaders in the program. The board marked the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month with a mariachi performance by Yunuen Carrillo, one of our community partners and a local performer. Thirty-nine percent of district students are Hispanic, and Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15, honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans in our community. Finally, the board thanked Auxiliary Services Assistant Director Todd Plaga for overseeing the construction of the new district office.

Board Handbook Update

The board reviewed suggested changes to the Board Handbook that clarify how board members work with school community councils. The updated handbook will be approved at a future meeting.

Plan for Revising G-5: District Reconfigurations and Long-Term School Closures

The board needs to update Policy G-5: District Reconfigurations and Long-Term School Closures due to recent changes in state law. Board members were asked for their feedback, and the community will also be asked to share their opinions through a survey. Based on feedback, the board’s policy subcommittee will update the policy and bring it back to the board for further discussion in a future meeting.

Review of Middle-Level Education

This year, the district will be reviewing middle schools and middle-level education. The review will include a series of learning meetings and a look at how other districts across the state and country are managing middle-level education. Based on what they find, district leadership may make recommendations for changes to better support middle school students.

Public Hearing

The board heard from numerous community members during a public hearing regarding the general obligation bond proposal, for funding construction of new high school buildings and sustainability projects across the district, that will be on the November ballot.

Board Templates – Study Sessions, Reports, Discussions

To keep things consistent during board meetings, new templates will be used for reports, discussions, and study session topics.

Board Goals

Board members shared with the superintendent and business administrator what kind of information they need to further the determination of board goals for the years ahead.
