Board Goals

Reading: A Core Goal for Our Board of Education

The Board of Education has set reading as one of its primary goals, aligning with the district's Strategic Plan, which emphasizes the crucial role of literacy in academic success and long-term achievement.

Strategic Goals and Targets

The district's Strategic Plan for Student Achievement sets clear targets to enhance reading proficiency among students:

  • 65% of students will increase reading proficiency on grade level.
  • 65% of students will make at least one year’s worth of growth based on their student growth target (SGT), including metrics like scaled scores and Median Growth Percentiles (MGP).
  • 65% of students with significant cognitive disabilities will make adequate progress in reading.**

These ambitious goals reflect a commitment to ensuring that all students, regardless of their starting point or individual challenges, achieve meaningful progress in reading.

Reading by Third Grade

Research consistently highlights reading proficiency by third grade as a pivotal marker for future academic success. Students who read at grade level by this time are more likely to excel in subsequent grades, graduate from high school, and pursue higher education or enter the workforce successfully. Conversely, those who fall behind in reading by third grade often struggle academically and are at a higher risk of dropping out of school.

Why Reading Matters

Reading is more than just a fundamental skill; it is the foundation upon which all other learning is built. Proficient readers can access, comprehend, and engage with a wide range of subjects, from mathematics and science to social studies and the arts. Furthermore, strong reading skills contribute to critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to communicate effectively—all essential competencies in today's rapidly evolving world.
