Bluegrass Banjo 1 & 2
Bluegrass Banjo 1:
Bluegrass Banjo 1 is a beginning 5-String banjo class and no previous experience is required. We will learn basic “Earl Scruggs” picking styles in a bluegrass setting. Lessons include tuning, roll-patterns, chords and chord progressions, and accompaniment techniques. A 5-String banjo is required for this course. Bring your banjo, notebook, and a pen to the first class.
Bluegrass Banjo 2:
Bluegrass Banjo 2 is a continuation of the Bluegrass Banjo I class but is open to all levels. Lessons include movable chords, partial fingering techniques, intermediate roll-patterns, string tricks, backup techniques, and an in-depth exploration of the fingerboard. A 5-String banjo is required for this course. Bring your banjo, notebook, and a pen to the first class.
Bluegrass Guitar 1 & 2
Bluegrass Guitar 1:
In Bluegrass Guitar 1 you will study lead and rhythm guitar in a bluegrass music setting, strumming and picking popular old time and contemporary bluegrass tunes. We cover basic to intermediate rhythms and explore flatpicking melodies and various lead techniques. Previous experience helps but is not required. Please bring guitar, tuner, notebook, and a pen to class. Supplemental class materials are offered.

Campervans, Travel Trailers & RVs
This class is all about the systems in Campervans, Travel Trailers, and RVs. The class will focus on camper systems including electrical, plumbing, solar, heating, appliances, creature comforts, and more. Different types of vans, trailers, truck campers, and RVs will be discussed to help you decide what will work for you, your dog(s), your mountain bike(s), your family, etc.
Contemporary Dance
Contemporary is a genre of dance performance that developed in the mid 20th century. It is an eclectic style that emphasizes self-expression (if it feels good, it looks good!) and emotionality. Contemporary draws from ballet, modern, jazz, hip-hop. We are going to use Horton technique to build strength and flexibility, learn improvisational techniques to discover freedom and kinesthetic joy of movement, and learn dance routines. Let’s kick, hop, stomp, roll, contract, release, wave, slide, wiggle, shake, jump, fall, get back up and do it all over again! (The class content will be adjusted based on class’s preferences)
Drawing For Complete Beginners
Have you always been interested in drawing, but have no clue how to get started? If so, then this is the course for you! You'll become familiar with paper types, drawing styles, rendering techniques, and the basic principal of perspective, layout, design, lighting, volume, and space. The class will cover the use of pencil, charcoal, ink and scratchboard. Plan on spending about $35 for materials, a list will be provided before the 1st class.
Embroidery for Beginners
Have you ever wanted to start embroidering but didn't know where to begin? This class is perfect for you! This beginner embroidery class is awesome for anyone who wants to learn the basics of embroidery and master the satin stitch. We will be working on an embroidery project based on The Narrows of Zion National Park. In this National Park embroidery class, you will receive everything you need to start stitching and finish a project.
What will I get?

- Printed Narrows PDF pattern guide with step-by-step photos and beginner's tips on how to thread a needle, split thread, back a hoop, transfer patterns, etc.

Foraging for Wild Foods
Foraging (looking for) wild food is becoming more and more popular as people become more interested in eating organic and local fresh food. Learn to identify, harvest, prepare, and eat wild foods found here in Utah - everything from numerous, good tasting edible wild mushrooms to roots and berries. Many foods can be found even inside the city limits!! Taught by a lifelong wild foods forager. Includes a foraging field trip and wild foods dinner.
Guitar 1
Learn tuning, chords, chord progressions, strumming, picking and fingering. Build a foundation for beginning and intermediate guitar techniques while learning one, two, and three (or more) chord songs. No previous experience necessary or expected. Please bring your guitar, tuner, notebook, and a pen to class. Supplemental materials included.
Hip Hop
The Hip Hop dance style is a culture all by itself. Whether you are an experienced dancer or trying out this style for the first time, this is a pumping class for you. Open to all levels of experience, just bring your A-Game and love for dance, music, and moving. Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move around in.

Mandolin 1 & 2
Mandolin 1:
Mandolin 1 is a beginning class with a folk and bluegrass emphasis, no previous experience is required. Lessons include tuning, basic chords & progressions, strumming, picking, tremolo, and fingering techniques. Build a foundation for more advanced playing while learning one to three chord songs. An eight string acoustic mandolin is required for this course. Please bring your mandolin, notebook, and a pen to the first class.
Mandolin 2:
Mandolin 2 is not a beginning class, previous Mandolin experience is required. Lessons include tuning, basic chords & progressions, strumming, picking, tremolo, and fingering techniques. Build a foundation for more advanced playing while learning one to three chord songs. An eight string acoustic mandolin is required for this course. Please bring your mandolin, notebook, and a pen to the first class.
Oil Painting for Beginners
Welcome to the exciting world of oil painting! In this introductory class, we will learn about the foundations of oil painting including tools, color mixing, paint application, etc. This class is designed for both beginners with no prior painting experience and those looking to enhance their skills. Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on cultivating your individual style in a supportive and collaborative learning environment. By the end of the class, you will have gained a solid foundation in the basics of oil painting, allowing you to continue your creativity with confidence!
Real Estate Investing 101
Scottish Country Dancing
Silversmithing Intermediate/Advanced
Take your silversmithing skills to the next level. This class will teach you to create three dimensional hollow forms (see picture below). We’ll cover designing a piece, texturing metal, shaping, soldering silver or base metals (copper, brass, bronze) into hollow shapes, finishing, and other techniques. This is not a class for beginners; students need to have taken the Silversmithing introduction class or have experience. Students will be expected to bring materials for their project to class (silver sheet, bezel wire, gems, etc.). Some materials will be available for purchase in class.
Spanish 1 - 4
Spanish 1:
This class is designed for students with no previous exposure to the Spanish language. Students will learn vowels and their sounds, cognates, the alphabet, numbers, adjectives, and greetings. Students will learn to pronounce, read and spell properly and will learn the simple present tense. No prerequisite required.
Spanish 2:
This class is designed for students with some knowledge or previous exposure to the Spanish language and desire to expand their skills. Students will learn the progressive present tense, regular and irregular verbs including Tener que (to have to), necesitar (to need to), querer (to want to), poder (to be able, can, may), and ir a (to go to). Prerequisite: Spanish 1 or its equivalent.
Spanish 3:
This class is designed to help students understand and speak the Spanish language correctly. Students will review the present tense as they learn the four past (preterite, progressive past, used to, and imperfect) and future tenses. Prerequisite: Spanish 2 or its equivalent.
Spanish 4:
This class will focus on reflexive verbs and their pronouns and direct and indirect objects and their pronouns. Students will review all conjugations and vocabulary. This is not a conversational class. Prerequisite: Spanish 3 or equivalent.
Swedish 1 & 2
This class builds on Introduction to Swedish. We will review vocabulary and basic sentence structure and start learning present, past, and future tenses, as well as singular and plural forms of regular and irregular nouns. We will have brief discussions around culture and history. This class is perfect for those who are new to the Swedish language, and also for those who know some Swedish and wish to improve their listening, speaking, and reading skills.
Tarot & Beyond
Delve into the exciting world of tarot and oracle cards. Learn to use the Tarot as a tool for deeper inner awareness, improved intuition, and valuable guidance. This class will cover the major and minor arcanas, archetypal vs. personal interpretations, numerology in Tarot, and your personal soul card. Reads with oracle cards as stand-alone divination tools or in combination with the Tarot will be covered in the final class. Please bring either a Waite based or Thoth deck to class.
Utah Rock Art & Archeology
This class is an introduction to the prehistoric Native American rock art of Utah. The course will introduce participants to the state's rock art styles, connect them to the archaeological and spiritual context in which the rock art was created, and offer and engage participants in interpreting the meaning of certain enigmatic rock art panels. Participants will also be introduced to the concepts of rock art etiquette and stewardship. The course's goal is to enthrall participants with the array of astonishing prehistoric rock art panels found throughout Utah and give them a basic understanding of this medium's function and meaning.

Band: YACP
Belly Dance
Learn basic belly dance technique and fundamentals in this 6-week beginning belly dance class. We will break down moves, practice technique drills, and put them together in fun combinations. This class welcomes new beginners as well as those with previous experience. Wear clothing you can move and stretch in—there will be a short warm-up and cool-down for each class.

Buy right the first time by learning the steps of home buying, including the role of real estate agents, mortgage lenders, credit and interest rates, as well as down payment programs, closing costs and loan programs. Home Selling
Selling a home, either on your own or with a real estate agent isn't as simple as it seems. Marketing a home and attracting prospective buyers is only half the challenge. Getting under-contract and getting the house to close is the other. Learn about the real estate market, pricing and appraisals, what to know about inspections, prepping a home to sell and find out what the seller obligations and responsibilities are. Knitting & Crochet
Learn how to complete knitting or crochet patterns. Take your skills to the next level whether you are a beginner or an intermediate knitter. Please bring 1- skein of yarn #4 worsted weight, light plain color preferred, 1 pair size 8 knitting needles, 1 size H/8 crochet hook to the first night of class. Beginners kits with these materials will be available to purchase the first night of class for $10.00. Patterns are available.

Welding/Metal Arts
Learn welding safety, use of metal shop tools, and basic fundamentals for creating small projects, such as yard art, tables, fire pits, etc. Several different welding processes are taught. Must provide own metal. Shop tools and equipment are provided. NO SHORTS, NO OPEN TOE SHOES.
Extension:
Do you need more time on your project, or have you taken this class before? This four week extension class with give you more time with the expertise of your teacher and the supplies of the classroom to perfect your project. NO SHORTS, NO OPEN-TOED SHOES.
Woodworking
Woodworking 1:
This class teaches students how to safely and effectively use woodworking tools and machines. Students will learn how to work with a variety of machines and processes found in the shop. Students will work on projects to learn safety and proper use of the machines with a curriculum and an instructor. Please email the Highland Community Ed office for project details and questions. *Woodworking 1 and/or teacher approval is required before students can register for Woodworking 2.
Woodworking 2:
This class is for students who are more advanced and those who have completed Woodworking 1. Students will have access to machines and tools in the shop as well as help from the instructor to complete projects of their choice. Students must provide wood and other materials associated with their project. *Woodworking 1 and/or teacher approval is required before students can register for Woodworking 2.
Zumba
Zumba takes the "work" out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. Once the Latin and World rhythms take over, you'll see why Zumba® Fitness classes are often called exercise in disguise. Super effective? Check. Super fun? Check and check. A total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, boosted energy and a serious dose of awesome each time you leave class.

Aikido
Aikido is a modern martial art that stresses positioning, redirection of an attacker's force, and calmness for effective conflict resolution. Students will learn aikido techniques to defend against a variety of attacks, typically working in partners. Wear comfortable clothes that you can move in, long pants and sleeves are recommended. Expect moderate anaerobic exercise and safe, close contact with your training partners. We study the Kokikai style created by Shuji Maruyama Sensei.
All Thing Swing Dance

Improve your basic ballet technique and increase flexibility and strengthen your arms, legs and core. Barre and center work will be combined to give a great ballet workout in a relaxed environment. Whether you are an experienced dancer looking to improve technique, or want to try ballet for the first time, this class is right for you! Open to all levels of experience.
Ballroom & Latin Dance
Make it a date night and have more fun at upcoming parties, weddings, cruises, and social dance events. Learn easy, basic patterns in a variety of social dances plus lead, follow, styling, and technique. Taught by a master teacher with over 30 years of professional teaching experience. Singles welcome!

Pilates - Beginning Mat
This Pilates mat class focuses on strengthening and lengthening your entire body, with an emphasis on building core stability and strength. Participants will come to understand the 5-basic principles of STOTT PILATES®, which help improve mind-body connection, posture, and balance. Photography -Landscape & Wildlife
Landscape & Wildlife
Own a DSLR or mirrorless camera? Want to maximize your camera knowledge? This course will teach you about composition, lighting principles, portraiture, ISO settings, white balance, shutter speed, F stops (aperture), manual modes, how to freeze motion for sports and wildlife photography, and principles of long exposures. Learn how to use your DSLR camera and enjoy all it has to offer.
Pottery: Hand & Wheel
Explore a variety of wheel thrown and hand built pottery techniques. Utilize a selection of demonstrations tailored to the desires and abilities of the class to create functional and/or sculptural objects. Aspects of the ceramic process from making to glazing and firing will be discussed. Emphasis on improving skill and craftsmanship. Includes one block of clay.

Pottery: Hand Building
Learn how to use tools and techniques to create architectural and artistic forms out of clay. Create plates, vases and cups with slab. Positive and negative sculpture, low-poly representation and more. Learn hand building techniques and then try them on your own project. Includes one block of clay.
Registration for the Winter 2024 Pottery classes will open on January 1, 2024.
Russian
Russian 1: Learn alphabet, basic vocabulary, basic rules governing case endings, basic conversations, rules of grammar, etc.
Russian 2: Continuation of beginning class. Includes more complex forms of speech and verb usage.
Russian 3: This class extends communication and conversation skills as well as reading easy stories. Students must have some knowledge of present, past and future tense. Students must also have basic communication skills, some conversation skills, and basic reading skills. This is not a pure conversation class. This class will include explanation of grammar rules and translation.
Russian 4: This class will be a continuation of class 3 with an emphasis on Russian plurals, adjectives, and nouns. This class will include some conversation along with grammar rules.
Salsa & Bachata Dance
Spanish
Beginning: Learn numbers, alphabet, basic vocabulary, basic conversation, grammar, and beginning reading. 10 student minimum. Pre-registration appreciated.
Advanced Beginning: Requires some knowledge of using verbs in present tense and some basic vocabulary. Continue basic conversation, grammar and reading. 10 student minimum. Pre-registration appreciated.
Intermediate Movies: Students will watch a selected movie in Spanish that is specifically designed for language learners with accompanying Spanish subtitles. Besides the work on translation, grammar and idiomatic expressions, there will be exercises provided that will keep students engaged in the story and reinforce the new skills that they learn.
Water Color Painting
Beginning:
Learn traditional watercolor techniques; including basics in color, washes, shadows and glazing. Lots of support and instruction. A fun beginning class. Materials list will be emailed.
Intermediate:
This course is designed for students with previous experience in Linda Moffitt's Beginning Watercolor class. Enjoy learning more advanced techniques. There will be lessons on composition, color theory and class demonstrations. Students will receive one-on-one input. Pre-requisite: Linda Moffitt's Beginning Watercolor class.
Yoga Classes
Traditional:
This unique class encourages flexibility, strength, and a sense of deep, peaceful ease in body, mind and spirit. All levels welcome. Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothing.
For Less Flexible Bodies:
This slower paced yoga class is all about taking time in easier poses (no handstands or pretzels!) to slowly open tight muscles in a comfortable environment. Recommended for those who wish to gently increase strength, range of motion, and flexibility. No prior yoga experience is necessary. Bring your mat.
Kundalini Yoga, Meditation & Gong Relaxation:
Kundalini Yoga is known as the yoga of awareness. It is a journey, practice and science that connects you with your deepest Self, your Soul. We incorporate ancient yogic technologies including yoga postures, meditation, pranayama (breath work) & mantra, to improve the quality of our lives; It is a self-liberation! These tools will empower you to cultivate compassion and stability even during life’s most challenging circumstances.
Jr. Leopards Wrestling
Build your physical and mental toughness in one of the world's oldest sports. Wrestling will hone you into an elite athlete. Sign up now to become a champion. Classes divided into three age levels: 6 - 10 years, 11 – 14 years, and 15-19 years. Register your athlete through USA Wrestling before the first class. Tournaments will be on the weekends.

Community Ed. Refund Policy
You may receive a full refund if you notify the school where the class is held at least one business/working day before the class starts. You may receive a refund for half of the tuition after the first class starts and before the second class begins. Material fees cannot be refunded once the class starts. If Community Ed cancels a class, patrons will receive a full refund. If you pay by credit card, your card will be refunded minus the convenience fee. Refunds for checks are issued after the check has cleared.
