The Board explored ways to make high school diplomas more meaningful for every student and reviewed options for increasing the number of credits required for graduation. They discussed possible new diploma pathways designed to help students follow their interests, prepare for college or career training, and reach their full potential. SLCSD is the only district along the Wasatch Front that does not require 27 or more credits for high school graduation.  

Business Administrator Alan Kearsley reviewed preliminary property tax rates for 2026–27. These early estimates help families understand how the district plans to fund programs, maintain schools, and support students, while keeping careful oversight of the community’s resources. The district does not plan on seeking a tax increase for the 2026-27 school year. 

The Board reviewed positive progress on Pillar 2 of the Strategic Plan for Student Achievement, highlighting strong efforts to boost student success. Updates reflected expanded opportunities for civic readiness, continued focus on improving proficiency in core subjects, and growing access to college and career pathways. Overall, the discussion emphasized meaningful momentum in preparing students with the skills, knowledge, and experiences they need to thrive after graduation. 

Applied Economics presented a draft report showing enrollment trends, current demographics of the community, and enrollment projections for the next 5-10 years.  The report showed a substantial decline in Utah’s birthrates and a decline in school enrollment across the state, including a continued decline in SLCSD enrollment. Understanding these trends helps the district plan for the future, ensure resources are used wisely, and continue providing high-quality programs that meet student needs. 

After holding its second public comment period on school fees, the Board approved the school fee schedule for 2026-27, with a focus on keeping programs accessible to all students. The school fees and fee waiver policy and procedures focus on ensuring every student can participate fully in learning and enrichment opportunities regardless of financial circumstances. 

Principal Britnie Powell presented the Salt Lake Center for Science Education’s application to become a charter school for grades 6-12. The school provides a STEM-focused learning environment that encourages curiosity, and real-world problem solving. SLCSE is a high school chartered through the SLCSD Board of Education. The SLCSE charter is currently up for renewal.

The Board approved a reclassification of a Special Education Testing Compliance Assistant role. This change ensures the position supports state and federal compliance and better supports school assessment needs.
