Board Report for March 18, 2025

The Board of Education looked at information from neighboring school districts and districts across the country regarding programs that offer extra pay and resources to staff in Title 1 schools. They examined whether these programs impacted student learning and helped retain teachers. They also reviewed the costs of different program models and how current Title 1 resources are being used in our schools. (watch on YouTube)
The Board of Education recognized the following:
- They congratulated the winners of the recent district and regional science fairs. (watch on YouTube)
- A small exhibit outside the board room featured artwork by Highland High students. The pieces, created by students of Highland art teacher Tisha Myers, were inspired by female artists in honor of National Women’s History Month.
- Board members congratulated the Highland High Boys Basketball team and the West High Girls Basketball team for reaching the state championship finals. The West High team was undefeated up until the championship game. Their coaches shared:
- The student athletes on the West High team raised the team’s collective GPA to 3.4.
- Highland had the most wins in team history and made the playoffs for the first time in 15 years. (watch on YouTube)
The board received reports on the following topics:
- A review of the preliminary property tax rates for 2025-26, including recent legislative changes that affect how tax funds are distributed to school districts. (watch on YouTube)
- An update on goals and progress from Pillar 3 of the Strategic Plan for Student Achievement. The report highlighted progress toward our district goals and this year’s accomplishments by the Salt Lake Education Foundation and the Communications & Community Relations department. (watch on YouTube)
- A review of certain bills debated and passed during the recent legislative session. While not all bills were discussed, the report focused on those that will impact the district’s budget and programs. (watch on YouTube)
The board held a public comment period at 7:15 PM to take comments on the proposed 2025-26 Student Fee Schedule and a possible grade reconfiguration of Nibley Park School.
The board discussed the following topics:
- Proposed changes to the Administrative Procedures for Policy G-5, which covers school closures, boundary changes, and grade-level reconfigurations. This item was moved to the action agenda. (watch on YouTube)
- Updates to the 2025-26 Student Fee Schedule, including related policies and procedures. This item was also moved to the action agenda. (watch on YouTube)
- A possible grade reconfiguration of Nibley Park School from a K-8 school to a K-6 school. This item was moved to the action agenda. (watch on YouTube)
The board made the following decisions:
- They sent the proposed changes to Policy G-5 back to the Board Policy Subcommittee for further review and edits. (watch on YouTube)
- They approved the 2025-26 Student Fee Schedule along with its related policy and procedures. (watch on YouTube)
- They voted to postpone the decision on proposed grade-level reconfiguration of Nibley Park School and will revisit the issue at a future meeting. (watch on YouTube)
