Salt Lake City School District officially broke ground on the new Highland High School, launching a major investment in students and the future of the Sugar House community.
Opened in 1956, Highland High has served generations of students and built a lasting legacy of academic excellence, strong extracurricular programs, and deep community pride. Today’s ceremony honored that history while marking the start of a new chapter.
Students, district leaders, board members, and community partners gathered to celebrate the $300 million project, made possible by the $730 million bond approved by voters in 2024. The bond also supports the rebuild of West High School, improvements at East High School, and sustainability upgrades across the district.
The event featured performances by the drumline, cheerleaders, madrigals, and wind ensemble, with Student Body President Norman Genda serving as master of ceremonies.
The new Highland High School will be built in phases on the existing campus, allowing students to remain in class throughout construction. Work is expected to take approximately 46 to 48 months, with the new school projected to open around 2030, extending Highland’s legacy for decades to come.
