The Salt Lake City School District Board of Education is launching its inaugural Community Advisory Council, and we are looking for community members who want a voice in the district's long-term decisions. 

The Community Advisory Council (CAC) brings together residents and community leaders from across Salt Lake City to provide perspective and advice to the Board on significant, long-term issues facing the district. The council advises the Board. It does not direct staff or district operations, and the Board of Education makes final decisions. 

Council members will help the Board: 

  • understand community perspectives 
  • consider how significant district decisions may affect students, families, schools, and communities 
  • identify opportunities, concerns, and considerations that should inform long-term decision-making 
  • strengthen connections between SLCSD and the communities it serves 

Who we are looking for 

We are looking for community members who: 

  • care deeply about the success of SLCSD students and schools 
  • bring knowledge of and connections to their communities 
  • are willing to listen to perspectives different from their own 
  • can consider issues from a districtwide perspective 
  • are thoughtful, curious, and collaborative 
  • can commit the time necessary to participate meaningfully 

No particular professional background or educational expertise is required. 

Time commitment 

The CAC will meet four times during the 2026 to 2027 school year, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM: 

  • November 5, 2026 
  • January 28, 2027 
  • March 25, 2027 
  • May 20, 2027 

Members are also expected to review materials before each meeting and may occasionally be asked to gather perspectives or complete reasonable follow-up between meetings. 

Membership and How to Apply

The CAC includes up to 18 members: two residents from each of the district's seven Board voting districts, plus four additional representatives with ties to higher education, past Board service, the broader community, and the Mayor's office. 

Applications are open September 17 through September 30, 2026. 

After the application period closes, Board members will review applications from their voting district and may conduct interviews. Nominations go to the full Board for discussion and appointment on October 20, 2026, and selected members will be notified between October 21 and 28.
