Evaluation
Evaluation
How do we know if our programs and services are working?
SLCSD uses evaluation to understand what is working well, where there are opportunities for improvement, and how programs and services are meeting the needs of students and families. Evaluation may look at student outcomes, program participation, surveys, implementation, and other information to help schools and district leaders make informed decisions.
Evaluation is different from an assessment or test. Assessments help us understand what an individual student knows or can do. Evaluation helps us understand how well a program, service, or initiative is working.
The Assessment & Evaluation Department supports schools and district leaders by collecting and analyzing information, conducting surveys and program evaluations, and sharing findings that can guide continuous improvement.
-
Depending on the purpose, an evaluation may include assessment results, participation information, surveys, interviews, observations, program information, or other data. We use appropriate safeguards when working with student information.
-
Some evaluations may use student-level information to understand program outcomes. Results are reported in ways that protect student privacy.
-
Evaluations may be conducted by the SLCSD Assessment & Evaluation Department, other district departments, school staff, or qualified external partners, depending on the purpose and scope of the evaluation.
-
Yes. Parents are welcome to contact the Assessment & Evaluation Department with questions about an evaluation, survey, or published report.
Research
Research helps us learn more about teaching, learning, and the experiences of students in Salt Lake City School District. Research may be conducted by SLCSD staff, universities, or other qualified organizations to better understand what works, identify areas for improvement, and contribute to knowledge that can benefit students and educators.
Research projects may involve analyzing existing information, surveys, interviews, observations, or other forms of data. Projects involving students or student information are reviewed to ensure appropriate protections are in place and that the research follows applicable district, state, and federal requirements.
The Assessment & Evaluation Department helps coordinate and support research conducted in SLCSD and works to ensure that research is purposeful, appropriate, and respectful of our students, families, and schools.
-
Participation depends on the specific research project. Projects involving students must meet applicable requirements for consent, privacy, and student protections.
-
Student information is handled according to applicable privacy laws and district requirements. Researchers are only provided information that is appropriate and authorized for the approved purpose.
