New Food Law
What Families Should Know
Starting in the 2026-27 school year, Utah law limits certain food additives on school grounds during the school day. Schools may not sell, donate, offer, or serve food containing:
- Potassium bromate
- Propylparaben
- FD&C Blue No. 1 and No. 2
- FD&C Green No. 3
- FD&C Red No. 3 and No. 40
- FD&C Yellow No. 5 and No. 6
When the rule does not apply
- Food a parent provides to their student
- Food a school provides, but only with parent permission on file for the semester
- Food sold in a vending machine
- Concession items sold at a school-sponsored event
What this means for your family
You can still pack any food you choose for your own child. The semester permission process only applies when a school offers a restricted treat. Questions? Contact your school principal.
