Board Report for April 15, 2025

The Board of Education recognized the following students and teachers:
- The winners from this year’s Salt Lake City School District Battle of the Books. The three winning teams this year were from Washington Elementary, Newman Elementary, and Indian Hills Elementary. Congratulations to the winning teams and all who participated! (watch on YouTube)
The board heard the following reports:
- An overview of the district’s Capital Projects Fund and Debt Service Fund Budgets. These two budgets account for maintenance, renovations, and rebuilding of district buildings and debt payments made by the district. (watch on YouTube)
- An update on Pillar 4 of the Strategic Plan for Student Achievement, which included a look at district facilities, district staff, school safety, and student discipline. (watch on YouTube)
- A review of how schools across the nation use Title I funding, the state of family school collaboration in district schools, and a summary of the results from a survey of district Title I elementary and middle school teachers and administrators. (watch on YouTube)
The board discussed the following items:
- A resolution to authorize the issuance and sale of up to $155,000,000 in general obligation bonds. The money will be used to pay for rebuilding Highland and West High School as well as other items approved by voters in the November election. The board voted to move this item to the action agenda. - The purchase of Kick Up, software that helps manage professional development for teachers, including registration access, collecting participant feedback, and evaluating the effectiveness of professional learning. The board voted to move this to the action agenda. (watch on YouTube)
- Recommendations for district property use to meet immediate district needs. The recommendations include renovating several school fields so they can be used by teams from Highland and West High Schools while they are rebuilt and transforming Riley Elementary into a new and larger Career and Technical Center for the district. - Changes to Policy S-11: Student Electronic Devices in Schools. The changes were made and reviewed by the board policy subcommittee to bring the policy in line with recent changes in state law. The board voted to move this item to the action agenda. (watch on YouTube)
- A proposal to create a contract position for an administrator on special assignment. This position would be temporary (a maximum of three years) and would help administrators develop inclusive practices focused on co-teaching between special education and general education teachers.
