School Registration Information (Updated on June 30, 2026)

Welcome to Salt Lake City School District registration. We welcome both new and returning students and are excited for you to be part of our district!

Online registration opens on July 15, 2026. To enroll in an SLCSD school, every student, new students and returning students, needs to register each year. The following documentation is required:

  • proof of residence or an approved exception, such as:
    • a Utah driver’s license or driver’s privilege card,
    • mail received from an established business with your name and address,
    • a rent or mortgage payment statement, or
    • a utility bill, phone bill, or work order.
  • a certified copy of the student’s birth certificate or other reliable proof of the student’s identity and age, and
  • a certified and complete immunization record or official immunization exemption.

The online application is available in multiple languages and could take up to 20 minutes to complete, less time for returning students and more time if you also fill out the free and reduced price school meals application.

Under the McKinney-Vento Act, students experiencing homelessness are entitled to immediate enrollment and full participation in school even if they are unable to produce records normally required for enrollment.

New Students

Families new to the district will register their student(s) online, using the same school registration page. Once there, you can select “New Student” and continue through the registration process. You will need to complete the registration process for each of your students.

Returning Students

For students returning to the district, parents will need a PowerSchool Parent Portal account to register. If you are not sure if you have an account or have forgotten your login information, we have a video on YouTube showing you how to recover your information. If you need to set up a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, you can also go to YouTube for instructions on creating an account

These videos and their captions can be translated by clicking on settings in YouTube (the gear icon in the bottom right corner of the video) and selecting the language you need. More instructions and information about PowerSchool Parent Portal can be found on our website.

Beginning July 15, students and parents can log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal or PowerSchool Student Portal to easily view and adjust class schedules, with no need to wait in line to meet with a counselor.

To help ensure a smooth experience, ClassChoice access will open in stages by grade level:

  • July 15 – Seniors
  • July 20 – Juniors
  • July 22 – Sophomores
  • July 24 – All grade levels

The ClassChoice feature will remain available through August 9, 2026, giving students and families plenty of time to review and customize class schedules.

Kindergarten Registration

We’re so glad you’re here exploring kindergarten for your child. Beginning school is a big milestone, and we’re honored you’re considering our schools as the place where your child’s learning journey will begin. Our goal is to create a strong foundation for curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning in every student.

To enroll in kindergarten, students must be at least five years old on or before September 1 of the school year they're enrolling for. If your child is younger, please consider enrolling in our Early Childhood programs

We have a page dedicated to Kindergarten Registration, with more information and links for parents.

Open Enrollment/School Choice

In Utah, families have a choice in where their students attend school. Utah law allows families and their students to apply to attend a school even if it is outside of their neighborhood.

November 15-First Friday in February

Early Open Enrollment

Early Open Enrollment is the time when parents can submit their application(s) for the coming school year. Early Open Enrollment applications are accepted November 15th  through the first Friday in February. You can see a full timeline of the Early Open Enrollment process on our School Choice webpage.

Applications are reviewed and accepted based on the following priorities.

  1. Your student has a sibling at the requested school.
  2. You are a district employee.
  3. You are a SLCSD resident.
  4. You reside outside of the SLCSD district.

Other Times of the Year

Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment applications will be accepted throughout the year. Before completing and submitting the online application for open enrollment, check with your preferred school to make sure it is accepting transfer students. Schools may not be able to approve an open enrollment application until after the beginning of school, when the principal can determine if space is available to accommodate the request.
