Frequently Asked Questions

  • ELEMENTARY:

    • First, accommodations and differentiated instruction are offered in the regular classroom.
    • If your child is identified for additional services beyond their classroom, they may be eligible for part-time or full-day grouping with students of similar abilities.
    • If eligibile for full-day services in the Magnet Gifted and Talented program, students are placed in their area Magnet school.
    • For the 2025-2026 school year, area Magnet schools are::
      • Edison Elementary (1st-6th grades)
      • Indian Hills Elementary (1st-6th grades)
      • Nibley Park Elementary (Magnet/DLI 2nd-6th grades)
      • Washington Elementary (6th grades)
      • Whittier Elementary (1st-6th grades).
    • Transportation is available to your area Magnet school if you live more than 1.5 miles from the school.  Bus routes are set by the Transportation Department.
    • Part-time services in the AAMP (Advanced Academics and Mentorship Program; formerly “Neighborhood ELP”) involves up to 3 hours a week of special pull-out classes focusing on grade-level specific topics with additional depth and complexity for students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades in most elementary schools.

    MIDDLE SCHOOL:

    • Middle school students have two opportunities for advanced classes:
      • Honors (which is now combined with neighborhood ELP, and students can self-select into).
      • Magnet (which students need to test into) and serves students in up to four core subjects including language arts, science, social studies and mathematics.
    • Middle school Magnet services are offered:
      • Clayton Middle School
      • Hillside Middle School
      • West High School
  • Assessment reports from district assessments are posted in the Parent Portal about three weeks after a testing session concludes.  The AAMP (previously NELP) teacher at each school will send qualification and opt-in letters to students who qualify for school-based services.  Students who qualify for Magnet Gifted & Talented (previously MELP) will receive qualification and opt-in letters from the Advanced Academics Department.  Notification typically happens about 2 weeks after assessments are posted in Parent Portal.

  • The Advanced Academics Department only sends notification letters to those who qualify for a specific service.  We feel that it would be unkind to notify everyone that their student did not qualify for something they were not pursuing.  If you did not receive a letter, you are welcome to contact the ELP District Office or your Neighborhood AAMP (previously NELP) teacher if you have follow-up questions about notification.  Letters are sent via ParentSquare (be sure to sign up to received ParentSquare notifications).

  • Our goal is to meet the individual needs of students, but that does not always mean they need full-time Magnet placement. If you feel your child needs more of a challenge in their general education classroom, AAMP teachers can collaborate with classroom teachers to provide additional learning opportunities.

  • There is a separate appeal process for AAMP and Magnet services.

    ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
For Part-Time, In-School AAMP Services – LINK TO APPEAL FORMS PAGE

For Full-Day Magnet Services – LINK TO APPEAL FORMS PAGE

    MIDDLE SCHOOL
For Magnet Services – LINK TO APPEAL FORMS PAGE

For Honors Classes – No appeal necessary.  Students can self-select into Honors classes (these are now combined with neighborhood ELP classes).

  • In some cases, taking the assessment is not beneficial or required. Reach out to your neighborhood AAMP teacher to inform them of your desire to opt-out.

  • All students who already qualified for a service do not need to requalify for that service.

Previously invited and/or inactive Magnet students who wish to opt back into full day Magnet services will be placed on the waitlist ranked by CogAT scores.  Parent click on this link to complete the PREVIOUSLY IN MAGNET OR DECLINED MAGNET & SEEKING CURRENT CONSIDERATION form.  Deadline to opt back into the waitlist is the last Friday in March (for this year that will be Friday, March 27, 2026).

If your student is an AAMP student and you are interested in Magnet full day services, then follow appeal procedures for consideration.

  • Students who qualified for GT services in another district should contact the Advanced Academics Supervisor about submitting appropriate documentation to determine eligibility and possible placement.
