Board of Education Selects New Member

Salt Lake City Board of Education Names Michelle Tuitupou to Fill Board Vacancy in Precinct 1 
Ms. Tuitupou will serve through the end of 2020 

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – May 6, 2020 – Last night, the Salt Lake City Board of Education voted to appoint Michelle Tuitupou to fill the Board seat vacancy in Precinct 1. Ms. Tuitupou was one of eight applicants who applied to fill the Precinct 1 seat. 

“I am honored to represent Precinct 1 through December as a board member and look forward to working with the amazing and resilient educators in my area as well as in our district,” said Ms. Tuitupou. “As a first-generation Samoan, I had to learn how to navigate the school system for my own children and have had wonderful experiences with educators within our public school system. During these unprecedented times, I have witnessed the creativity, support, and concern among our educators and community at large and am proud to serve in this role. So'o le fau ma le fau, in working together, we can accomplish great things.”  

Ms. Tuitupou has four children, three who are alumni of the Salt Lake City School District and one who is currently in middle school. She holds a B.S. in Broadcasting from Northern Arizona University and an M.A. in Education from the University of Phoenix. Ms. Tuitupou is a former teacher and currently works in higher education as an Academic Advisor in the University of Utah’s College of Mines and Earth Sciences. She is involved locally as a member of the State of Utah Multicultural Commission and Pasifika Enrichment of the Arts in Utah, as a participant in the Westside Leadership Institute, and through numerous higher education outreach events in the community. 

 Ms. Tuitupou will serve in the position until the end of the current calendar year. The seat is up for re-election in the November 2020 General Election.
