QUESTION: When is Salt Lake City School District going back to uniforms, and what can I do if my student is being bullied?

ANSWER: We do not have a district-wide dress code or uniform policy. Our student dress code policy (Board Policy S-5: Student Dress Code) directs each school community council to develop a dress code that encourages positive school spirit, maintains a disciplined and focused educational environment, and promotes student safety. If a school community council would like to adopt the use of school uniforms, there are steps and guidelines they need to follow to ensure parents have input on that decision. The procedures are outlined in the Administrative Procedures for Policy S-5.

Please contact someone on your school community council to determine if there is interest in uniforms at your school. You should be able to find contact information for your school community council on your school’s website. Click on “Community” near the top of the school website, and then click on School Community Council (SCC).”

For your second question, the Salt Lake City Board of Education and the Salt Lake City School District are committed to providing a learning environment that is welcoming and safe, one that is free from bullying, harassment, and discrimination. Please inform your student’s teacher and your school principal about what is happening and work with them to resolve the situation. If you feel the actions being taken are not sufficient, our School Leadership and Performance department has direct supervision over our schools. You can contact that department by calling (801) 578-8284.

I would encourage you to review Board Policy G-20: Bullying, Cyber-bullying, Hazing, and Abusive Conduct Prohibited. This policy and its Administrative Procedures contain a wealth of information, and you call fill out the complaint/request for investigation form that goes along with this policy. If you need additional help, you may also contact our Compliance Coordinator at (801) 578-8388.
