Superintendent's Newsletter - Feb. 4, 2021
Dear Salt Lake City School District community,
This coming Monday brings big changes to our district, with the beginning of our in-person learning option for 4th-6th grade students, as well as middle and high school students. Our administrators, teachers, and staff have been working hard to make sure our schools are safe and ready for students.
I’d like to share some key information with you as we prepare for next week.
COVID-19 TESTING FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
To ensure we start our in-person learning option for our largest high schools as safely as possible, the district is implementing a Test to Start and Test to Stay protocol at East, Highland, and West High Schools. Frequent COVID-19 testing of students and school staff, such as the testing offered by our Test to Start/Test to Stay protocol, is supported by the Salt Lake County Health Department. Testing is FREE for all students and staff.
All students and staff attending East, Highland, or West High Schools will participate in Test to Start prior to returning to in-person learning. Testing is not mandatory, but those who do not participate will need to remain in remote learning for a 10-day period before returning for in-person learning, including students taking classes at the Career and Technical Center or those taking classes at other locations besides their home school.
Students who will be attending in-person learning and students who participate in athletics or other in-person extracurricular activities are required to be tested for COVID-19 before they return to campus. Remote learners who do not participate in in-person extracurriculars are also encouraged to participate in this free testing opportunity.
Testing will take place at the student’s home school. Please contact your school principal directly for information on testing dates for your student’s school.
If your student has previously been instructed to quarantine, please continue to adhere to the quarantine standards provided by the county health department. If they are on or past their seventh day of quarantine, they can get tested to be able to return to school in person.
Students who have tested positive in the past 90 days and are not currently in isolation will not have to test, if the student can provide documentation showing the date they had COVID. This information should have been sent to the student or the student’s family by the county health department.
MEALS FOR STUDENTS
The new in-person learning option that begins on Monday requires a few changes to our meals for students. Specifically, distribution times for our Grab and Go combo meals at our middle schools and high schools will be changing.
Free meals (breakfast and lunch) will be offered to all students who attend in-person learning in our schools. Meals will remain FREE for everyone through the end of this school year.
Beginning the week of February 8, on Wednesdays (and non-student days) – each participating school will provide free Grab and go combo meal service for remote learning students and the community, from 10:30 am until 12:30 pm.
On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays – each participating school will designate a half-hour meal service for remote learning students and the community to receive free combo meals. Signs will be posted to direct the public to a designated pick-up area, normally an outside door to the school cafeteria. Please check below for specific times and locations.
Please see the list below for a list of the locations and distribution times for participating schools.
- For students in remote learning: If your school is not participating in our Grab and Go meals (see list below), you may pick up meals at any other participating school during its designated serving time.

We’ve loved having some of our youngest learners back in the classroom over the last two weeks. We look forward to welcoming even more students in person next week and to continuing to engage our remote learners online.
Sincerely,
