Superintendent's Newsletter - Feb. 11, 2021

Dear Salt Lake City School District families,

Yesterday, members of our Board of Education convened a press conference to announce the three finalists in the Board’s search for a new superintendent to lead our district. The three finalists are (in alphabetical order by last name):

  • Dr. Jharrett Bryantt
  • Dr. Timothy Gadson
  • Dr. Wendy González

Biographies for each candidate and more information from the press conference can be found on the district website.

Next week, each candidate will have the opportunity to visit Salt Lake City to learn more about the Salt Lake City School District and the vibrant community in the city. Candidates will each have one day to visit schools and meet virtually with students, parents, employees, and community stakeholders. They will also participate in a public Board interview during their assigned date. This interview will be livestreamed on our YouTube channel to allow greater access to members of the community.

Candidates will visit Salt Lake City on Tuesday, February 16, Wednesday, February 17, and Thursday, February 18. The Board hopes to have input and participation from as many parents, employees, students, and other stakeholders as possible at the following virtual forums:

Community Forums: These will be held nightly from 7-7:50 p.m. on February 16, February 17, and February 18. All community members and stakeholder are invited to participate. The forum will be livestreamed. Spanish translation will be provided for the community forums. If you need translation in another language, please contact Molly Schwarzhoff at Molly@rayassoc.com

You can join each of the Community Forums on our district YouTube channel.

Parent Forums: These will be held nightly from 8-8:50 p.m. on February 16, February 17, and February 18. Parents will receive a form via email allowing them to submit questions for the superintendent candidates. This form will come from noreply_slcsd@qemailserver.com. The questions will be vetted by Ray and Associates, the consultants hired by the Board to manage the search for a new superintendent. Similar questions may be grouped together.

You can join each of the Parent Forums on our district YouTube channel.

Spanish translation will be provided for all parent forums. If you need translation in another language, please contact Molly Schwarzhoff at Molly@rayassoc.com.

Students: Students will have the opportunity to submit questions for the superintendent candidates. Students will receive a form from noreply_slcsd@qemailserver.com, which will allow them to submit their questions. Questions will be vetted by Ray and Associates. Similar questions may be grouped together. Questions will be asked to each candidate by student leaders at each of the three traditional high schools in the district: East High School, Highland High School, and West High School. Candidates will visit virtually with student leaders as part of their time in Salt Lake City. Each candidate’s conversation with student leaders will be recorded and will be made available via YouTube so all students can watch at their convenience.

A few other things:

  • Monday is Presidents’ Day. All district schools and offices will be closed, and we will not provide student meals on Monday. Meals will resume when school resumes on Tuesday.
  • Our three main high schools (East High, Highland High, and West High) are participating in the Test to Stay program. We administered rapid COVID-19 tests to students and employees at these schools and are thrilled to share that out of 2,800 students tested, only four were found to be positive for COVID-19. Only three staff members tested positive. The Test to Stay program is already helping us offer another layer of protection to our students and staff.

Have a wonderful three-day weekend.

Sincerely,

Larry Madden
Interim Superintendent
Salt Lake City School District
