Superintendent's Newsletter - January 28, 2021
Dear Salt Lake City School District community,
This week, we eagerly welcomed our first group of students who opted to attend in-person learning at our elementary schools. We look forward to welcoming more students in the next two weeks, and we are excited to continue working with our students who have chosen to continue learning remotely.
Thank you to our wonderful parents, families, and students for your patience and understanding during this transition. Thank you as well to our teachers, administrators, and staff who have made the necessary arrangements and adjustments to offer both in-person and remote learning. This is a new experience for all of us, but I know our students are in good hands.
Below are just a few updates for this week.
CHANGES TO STUDENT MEAL DISTRIBUTIONS
With the start of our in-person learning option for students, we need to make some changes to how we distribute meals for children.
- Free meals (breakfast and lunch) will be offered to all students who attend in-person learning in our schools. Meals will remain FREE for everyone through the end of this school year.
- For remote learning students and any child between the ages of 0-18 years, free Grab & Go combo meals (lunch and breakfast) may still be picked up by the student or their parent / guardian at any participating school during that school’s designated time slot. Please make sure you double-check the school’s designated window for Grab and Go meals, as the time may change from what we’ve been accustomed to. Please note there will be additional time changes for meal pick-up at our middle schools and high schools starting February 8, when our secondary students begin their in-person learning option. We will provide more information on updated times in next week’s newsletter.
- For students in remote learning: If your school is not participating in our Grab and Go meals (see list below), you may pick up meals at any participating school during their designated time slot.
All meals will be pre-bagged and offered in a manner to protect students, kitchen staff, and the public from COVID-19. We are unable to provide more than one menu option for Grab and Go meals each day because of these constraints. Our menus are completely pork free, and peanut butter will not be served to students who eat on campus. We will not be able to accommodate food preferences that are not medically necessary.
Meals for children with special, medical dietary needs will be provided upon request. Contact our dietician, Brianna Hardisty, R.D., via email at Brianna.Hardisty@slcschools.org or by phone at (801) 974-8380, to make arrangements.
Designated Grab and Go Meal Locations and Schedules
On Wednesdays (and non-student days), each participating school will provide Grab and Go meals to remote learning students and the community from 10:30 AM until 12:30 PM.
On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, each participating school has a designated time for remote learning students and the community to pick up Grab and Go combo meals. Signs will be posted to direct the public to a designated pick-up area. Please check below for specific times and locations.
