Superintendent's Newsletter - March 25, 2021

Dear Salt Lake City School District community,

I think we are all looking forward to Spring Recess in a few days. The week off (March 29-April 2) will hopefully be a chance to take a break and relax. However, I am asking for your help during Spring Recess. Our community is currently doing a great job at slowing the spread of COVID-19, and we need to keep that going.

With COVID-19 numbers going down and anyone age 16 or older now eligible for the vaccine, I know many of us are feeling hopeful, something we may not have felt for a long time during this pandemic. However, we need your help to continue to stay the course with the safety protocols we’ve been practicing all year, namely dedicated mask-wearing when interacting with those outside our own household, social distancing, frequent hand washing, and sanitizing.

I would ask that we put a special emphasis on these safety measures during the days off from school. After Spring Recess, we still have several weeks of school left, and we all need to work together to keep our students, employees, families, and schools safe and healthy.

Masks in Schools

While the State Legislature has set a deadline of April 10 on the general state mask mandate, please remember that this does not include schools in Utah. On March 10, Governor Spencer Cox issued the following announcement: “...It’s important to note that the mask mandate will continue after April 10 in schools and for large gatherings. Also, businesses can still require masks. And of course, every individual can choose to wear a mask...”

Under the current public health order for schools, all employees, students, and visitors will still be required to wear masks on school property, on a school bus, and in school buildings until at least the end of the current school year.

We are winning this battle, and now is not the time to give up.

Meals for Children During Spring Recess

I’d like to remind you that during the week of Spring Recess, March 29 - April 2, Salt Lake City School District will provide meals for children on two days only. Meals will be served during the hours of 10:30 am-12:30 pm.

  • On Monday, March 29, we will provide our normal Grab and Go Meal Service at 22 designated school sites.

  • On Tuesday, March 30, sacks of groceries, equivalent to four days of school meals, will be available for parents to pick up at any of 22 designated school sites. All food will be simple to prepare, healthy menu items that can be stored, prepared, and served to children at home.

You can find more information, including a list of the 22 designated school sites, on the district website
