Study Session

The Board of Education studied the possibility of creating different types of high school diplomas within the district. They examined the potential benefits and challenges of requiring more credits to earn different types of diplomas. The board is interested in feedback from students and families and will discuss this again in a future meeting.

REPORTS

The board received the following reports:

• An annual update on the district’s compliance with Title IX and various state laws related to athletics. Of note: coed athletics offerings have expanded to include our Unified Sports program and Drill Team. (Watch on YouTube

• A monthly update on construction projects across the district, including the rebuilding of Highland and West High Schools, roof replacements, parking lot resurfacing, and athletic field upgrades. Stay informed about district construction projects on our website. (Watch on YouTube)  

DISCUSSIONS

The board discussed the following topics:

The process for filling the mid-term Board Member vacancy in Precinct 5. Applications are available online and in the Superintendent’s Office and must be submitted in person or online by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. All qualified candidates will be interviewed during an open board meeting on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, starting at 5:00 p.m. The board will vote to appoint a new board member following the interviews. Revisions to the district’s Strategic Plan for Student Achievement. The Strategic Plan reflects our district’s commitment to equity, excellence, and continuous improvement. The board agreed to place this issue on a future agenda. (Watch on YouTube

• A new policy – P-14: Salary Supplement for Highly Needed Educators (SHiNE) Program. This policy aligns with a new state law. The SHiNE program replaces the former Teacher Salary Supplement program. The board voted to move this item to action. (Watch on YouTube

• Following guidelines in the Administrative Procedures for Policy G-5: District Reconfigurations and Long-Term School Closures, district leaders presented three proposals for school and program closures and changes:

a.     A proposal to study the possible closure of Innovations Early College High School.
b.    A proposal to study the closure of the Magnet Gifted and Talented Program at Washington Elementary School.
c.     A proposal to study the possibility of reconfiguring Nibley Park School from a K-8 school to a K-6 elementary school.
 
The board agreed to move forward with each of the in-depth studies. The district will hold an informational session at each school. Public comments are welcome and can be made using our online comment form or during public comment periods in the board meetings on October 21 and November 3, or during the public hearing on November 3. • The Human Resources Services report and the reclassification of the Construction Project Manager position.

• New policy P-14: Salary Supplement for Highly Needed Educators Program.

• Further study of the potential long-term closure of Innovations Early College High School.

• Further study of the closure of the Magnet Gifted and Talented program at Washington Elementary.
